[link to en.wikipedia.org]
At times and places of poor public sanitation (such as Medieval Europe), the consumption of alcoholic drinks was a way of avoiding water-borne diseases such as cholera. Small beer and faux wine, in particular, were used for this purpose. Although alcohol kills bacteria, its low concentration in these beverages would have had only a limited effect. More important was that the boiling of water (required for the brewing of beer) and the growth of yeast (required for fermentation of beer and wine) would tend to kill dangerous microorganisms. The alcohol content of these beverages allowed them to be stored for months or years in simple wood or clay containers without spoiling. For this reason, they were commonly kept aboard sailing vessels as an important (or even the sole) source of hydration for the crew, especially during the long voyages of the early modern period.

In cold climates, potent alcoholic beverages such as vodka are popularly seen as a way to “warm up” the body, possibly because alcohol is a quickly absorbed source of food energy and because it dilates peripheral blood vessels (peripherovascular dilation). This is a misconception because the “warmth” is actually caused by a transfer of heat from the body’s core to its extremities, where it is quickly lost to the environment. However, the perception alone may be welcomed when only comfort, rather than hypothermia, is a concern.
 Quoting: Rayrayz

I wonder how many cases of mass hysteria where humans become "zombie dumb" have occurred due to ergotism? I know it's implicated in a lot of the witch burning hysteria... and I have vague memories of an incident in Hungary that ended a bit more happily, but can't remember where the info is, maddening...

Strangely enough it all matters what manner of furnishings you have in your conciousness. These poisonings delineated the fervour of the times with honesty that is rare.

It was the severing with the ties of mother wisdom by the aggressive mind of absolutism stripped of any relativism or sense of humour.

A conciousness which sadly enough had to take things literally.

I am well.

If you are a chick...That's probably the reason I got a slightly whiny douche bag vibe from you...because I thought you were a guy.

If I knew you were a female then your "shtick" wouldn't have been irritating....and I would have reacted differently to you.

and SOS...I just meant that you two could be like soul brothers...talking about themselves endlessly under the stars...A bromance...not gay or anything...Strictly platonic.

but she's a woman, so there you go...

During the colonial period of American history, beer was the drink of choice. Including children! Think of how that must have stunted their brain development drinking beer when ever they were thirsty.

Of course, it was more important that they survived the harsh winters and numerous bacterial illnesses that were abundant during those days...but it must have been pretty interesting talking to the 'peasants' in those days...Bad teeth, short, stank like BO, permanently "wet brained", grammar school education at best...Would love to go back in time to 1700 and get some footage of how they acted.

I saw a documentary once where the women of a tribe would use their spit as part of the process in making alcohol for the men.

I remember being entirely disgusted but there was something about the pod they used which required chewing.

Either way...alcohol makes life more enjoyable.

Jesus turned water into wine according to the stories.

If God was against alcohol, I assume he would not have done as such.

I'm not drunk. I had 4 beers. At the time I was on my second beer. Don't try to justify your off putting and obnoxious behavior....

I can guess that's a reoccurring theme in your life...Not seeing how you made a bad social faux pas to a complete stranger...then blaming "alcohol" on it....or anything else but your own irritating personality.

I would react similarly if we were face to face and you were some smug douche bag guy...but in person is different because you could smile and say that line with a cheeky inflection and would come off differently.

More importantly, would you pop off that obnoxious comment face to face? I highly doubt it..."toughguy".

Even the Gods it seems, enjoy beer...

Hence...

Like a wild ass screaming the winds howled
The darkness was total, there was no sun. . . .
As for Nintu the Great Mistress,
Her lips became encrusted with rime.
The great gods, the Annuna,
Stayed parched and famished
.
The goddess watched and wept . . . (Dalley 31-32)

The great mother goddess complains bitterly about Enlil and Anu's shortcomings as decision-makers, and she weeps for the dead humans who "clog the river like dragonflies."

Also, "she longed for beer."

Now it is the gods' turn to go hungry:

"like sheep, they could only fill their windpipes with bleating.
Thirsty as they were, their lips
Discharged only the rime of famine"
(Dalley 33).

After seven days and nights of rain, the flood subsides, and Atrahasis disembarks and offers a sacrifice. The hungry gods smell the fragrance and gather "like flies over the offering."

In a mutilated passage, the great goddess swears by the flies in her necklace that she will remember the flood.

Me too. I'm vehemently anti-death penalty (unless there's stone-cold proof, lol)... unless you're talking about someone fucking with the food of others, lol. It's funny what riles us beyond all comprehension. But that's trust. I love to cook and share, doing something like that... wrong, just wrong, lol. Like I said, a trust thing, hospitality. I can't be rude to someone in my home, unless it's Trey... and he knows I'm just messing with him (not his food, lol).
