I see what you are saying, Phi. The story I am attempting to write at the moment is about a man who goes through a psychotic break. As he is descending into this break, bizarre things start to occur to him and reinforce and shape his evolving delusional state of mind.

That is my theme.

However, I need another layer to this character. I don't want him to have a love interest. This story isn't about love. It is about logic and reason, the infinite mystery of the universe, and mental illness with all of it's stigma's and baggage.

Although I do think that I do need to have my feelings in the zone when I write this....I haven't decided exactly how to write it yet.
