I was on I-77 driving South on my way to Raleigh - about 15 miles from the accident when I heard a blurb about a pile up around Fancy Gap and they suggested avoiding the area, I heard nothing else about it from multiple stations because I wanted to get more info and find out it I should really avoid this. I decided to take the "back roads." I Got off on 52, just North of Hillsville and took that all the way to I-40.
Ran into blinding Fog coming down the mountain-it's no joke--fog + winding country roads = big crashes. My intuition (and Garmin) paid off big time! I'm glad I took the scenic route!
