GLP camping/hiking/canoe-kayaking/survival thread!

So I have all of my recent orders and am extremely pleased!! Hopefully I will be able to get a multi-day hike done this week, being spring break, but the current snowing and wind might make me wait.

I will give a detailed report, esp on the hammock after I use it, it is amazing!

Any advice, experiences, trips gear or anything to share from this year?

My largest purchase this off-season was the Hennessy Hammock's Safari Deluxe, and this is AMAZING!!!!

So big, comfortable, lightweight, easy to set up, durable, I could go on and on!!

I would absolutely recommend Hennessy hammocks to anyone who enjoys camping and hiking.

The comfort of this is so amazing, even after my serious neuro-surgery I had earlier this Summer.

I just talked one of my good friends into buying one and he got the Explorer Deluxe. I am excited to see how it feels. I got the Safari Deluxe so that I could take a girl with me on occasion.

Some people say they are too pricey, but trust me they are worth it! And if you compare them to other higher-end hammock tents, they are actually cheaper than most, and higher quality!

I was going to go on a kayaking trip this weekend, but am pushing it back until later this Summer in hopes of doing better neck wise. But I have camped and done shortish hikes with if several times, and it is soooo amazing!!

I also just recently purchased this to make setting up and hiking in the dark a little more easy. I love the hand crank items, so nice and bright and you do not have to worry about batteries!

I have set my hammock up a few times in the dar, and while not difficult, it still only took me 5-1o minutes by myself, but having this would have made it even easier!

Going camping at Watkins Glen, NY this weekend. Cannot do a lot of intense hiking and stuff yet, but it should be fun!


Any good stories or tips from fellow GLP'ers from the summer thus far?

Just finished a five day hike in western Canada. Temps hit about 45F at night, and we all froze miserably. We used Walmart type of sleeping bags and they were worthless. Had to wear every shirt and pants to bed and still shook all night. NEVER CHEAPOUT ON SLEEPING BAGS. And then, I tried to use my nine dollar Walmart fire steel rod, and the damn thing broke its handle off and then the rod itself cracked in half. Between the crappy sleeping bags and useless fire steel, this scenario could be fatal I there weren't other supplies available. If you buy cheap gear you may die because of it. Your life may come down to the smallest item so buy the best quality.

One hiker packed what is called a freezer coat. Usually they are black colored, quilted coats used by warehouse workers and truck drivers kind of thing. Definitely not the kind of clothing you would associate with hiking. However, the coat is super light, rolls up really small and is very warm. And cost is only about thirty bucks and you can get them is a few other colors like green or brown or grey. I will never hike or camp again without one.

ALWAYS TAKE SOME EXTRA CLOTHES BECAUSE IT CAN GET VERY COLD AT NIGHT UNEXPECTEDLY AND WEATHER FORECASTERS ARE FULL OF SHIT.

I had a similar experience a few months ago. Went on a 3 day camping trip for the first few days of trout season. It was 25 degrees f the 2nd night, lol. And it was the first time I used my Hennessy Hammock, and I did not realize how much heat I would lose with air below me rather than ground. But omg, is it comfortable! I bought an insulation pad for it though which I will use now on cold nights.

Yeah, cheap sleeping bags and supplies are often so inexpensive for good reason. I have been using a military bad set recently and LOVE it!

I know I already posted about this, but am thinking about trying ti again this week sometime since I have yet to do it in the fall. Amazing trail for anyone in the area. Even worth a long drive for those within a few hours!!

I just bought a Jeep Laredo, def plan on using it to do some off roading and hiking, even this winter.
