NASA scientists are predicting a chance that asteroid Bennu will strike Earth in the future, potentially affecting an area the size of Texas.

Asteroid samples from the OSIRIS-REx mission will finally reach Earth next week, touching down in the Utah desert on Sept 24 - the same date as the future apocalypse Nasa is seeking to avert.

“We are now in the final leg of this seven-year journey, and it feels very much like the last few miles of a marathon, with a confluence of emotions like pride and joy coexisting with a determined focus to complete the race well,” said Rich Burns, project manager for OSIRIS-REx at Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

However, Nasa estimates that it could cause a six-mile wide crater and wreak devastation over a 600-mile radius.

The samples, which are contained in a fridge-sized capsule, will be fired to Earth from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft once it reaches a distance of 63,000 miles from the planet

On board are an estimated 8.8 ounces, or 250 grams, of rocky material collected from the surface of Bennu in 2020. Although the Japanese Hayabusa mission has brought samples back from an asteroid before, it is Nasa’s first asteroid sample and the largest amount ever collected in space.

The capsule will enter Earth’s atmosphere at around 3.42 pm BST on September 24, traveling at nearly 28,000 mph, and reaching temperatures twice as hot as lava.

Professor Dante Lauretta, leader of the OSIRIS-REx mission said: “The return of samples from Bennu is the culmination of over a decade of intense effort by thousands of people around the world.

Twenty minutes after the capsule drop-off, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will fire its thrusters to divert past Earth to visit another asteroid Apophis under a new mission name OSIRIS-APEX.

The spacecraft launched on September 8, 2016 and arrived at Bennu in December 2018

OSIRIS-REx, short for Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer, launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, in Florida, on September 8, 2016. The journey to rendezvous with Bennu took the spacecraft two years to complete, which were followed by another two years of scans while orbiting the asteroid.

The much-anticipated collection of material from Bennu's surface didn't occur until October 20, 2020, and it would be another three years until the spacecraft made its way back to Earth. That time is now, and the asteroid-sand in the hourglass of OSIRIS-REx's mission clock is sprinkling down to zero. The mission's asteroid sample return capsule is currently projected to land on Sunday (Sept. 24) at 8:55 a.m. MDT (10:55 a.m. EDT, 1455 GMT).

A Sept. 10 firing of OSIRIS-REx's thrusters honed the course for its landing site at the Department of Defense's (DoD) Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), in the western Utah desert. The remote, 36-mile by 8.5-mile (58-kilometer by 14-kilometer) area of land is bullseye for OSIRIS-REx's asteroid sample return capsule.


A "go/no-go" meeting will be held early Sunday to determine whether to proceed with the morning's landing, and initiate the separation command for OSIRIS-REx to release the sample return capsule. Assuming a unanimous "go" polling from team operators, OSIRIS-REx will release its asteroid sample container at precisely 6:42 a.m. EDT (4:42 a.m. MDT, 1042 GMT). It will be a little over four hours between then and the capsule's touchdown in Utah.


Bennu is a Near-Earth Object (NEO) that passes by the planet roughly every six years, and experts have been watching it since it was discovered in September 1999.

A new paper from the OSIRIS-REx science team predicts Bennu has a 0.037% chance (1 in 2,700) of hitting Earth; this will largely depend on another flyby. In 2135, Bennu will zoom past Earth just close enough that our planet’s gravitational pull could affect it in just the right way to put it on a path to hit us on Sept. 24, 2182 — almost 159 years to the day from this writing.

“The OSIRIS-REx data give us so much more precise information, we can test the limits of our models and calculate the future trajectory of Bennu to a very high degree of certainty through 2135,” Farnocchia added

A massive asteroid the size of the Empire State Building could hit Earth in 159 years, and NASA scientists will get their first up-close glimpse of a piece of it this weekend.

On Sunday, the first asteroid sample collected in space by OSIRIS-REx will make a controlled landing on Earth, the space agency said.

To successfully deliver the rock sample, spacecraft operators will “need to ensure OSIRIS-REx travels at the right speed and direction to release the sample capsule into the atmosphere, landing it on the U.S. Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range,” according to NASA.

The capsule will hurtle to Earth at 28,000 miles per hour, but its speed will be reduced thanks to parachutes, according to Earth.com. It is scheduled to land in the Great Salt Lake Desert in Utah, the science outlet reported.

NASA will air live coverage of the event at 10 a.m. ET on NASA TV, the NASA app and the agency’s website.

Previously, it had "three close encounters [with Earth] in 1999, 2005 and 2011," per the paper.

The space agency first launched OSIRIS-REx in September 2016 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and it reached Bennu in 2018.

After touchdown on Sunday, the rock sample will make another journey — to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where the material will be stored, according to Space.com.

NASA scientists are keeping a close eye on asteroid Bennu, a 1,610-foot-wide cosmic object that could smash into our planet.

If Bennu were to hit the Earth, it would slam into the surface at about seven miles per second. It is so big that it could release 1,400 megatons of energy, per a NASA calculation — which is at least 24 times as powerful as the nuclear weapon, the Tsar Bomba.

Thankfully, the chances of this happening are very slim — about 1 in 2,700, per a 2021 study.

Still, NASA is interested enough in Bennu to launch a seven-year-long mission to study it, which is due to bring back a precious sample from the asteroid in a dramatic landing on Sunday.

Bennu belongs to a category of asteroids called "city-killers." That means that if it were to hit the Earth — the probability of which is zero until 2,100 and very small after that, per NASA — it would be powerful enough to flatten a large city.

The diamond-shaped asteroid is no stranger to Earth's neighborhood. Its long orbit around the sun means it approaches the Earth about every six years. But it usually keeps a polite distance from us — it's never come closer than about 3 million miles from Earth.

As it makes its way around the solar system, Bennu's orbit can change, and that's where it gets a little riskier.

To make its 2182 appointment with the Earth, Bennu will need to pass within a very small window in space — a "gravitational keyhole" — in 2135. That would shift its orbit perfectly to line up with our planet.

But there's still a 99.96% chance it will miss us on that date.

This little probe, which has been sailing back from Bennu since May 10, 2021, should deliver its payload, a capsule containing the precious sample, as it passes about 63,000 miles from the Earth in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The capsule is planned to fall back to Earth later Sunday morning, landing in Utah around 10:55 a.m. ET.
