The smartest and toughest of them all...
I have been studying my roots and I am surprised at what i have found. The family has traced one side of the family back to the 700's and a certain scottish/scandinavian chief.....the other side...well it struggles in going back so far....I wonder.

My Mother was a McClure. They traced that root back several hundred years....a time when McClure as MacClure...before that it was Macleod. Yeah...that's right...I am a Macleod,...go figure.

What is most enraging is my father's side...we only know what happened back to the early 1800's. There is word that says we came from Scandinavian blood...but no proof.

My father's blood family here in America has accomplishment....we even have a town named after us..."Stephens city" Virginia. I don't want to be a king...I am just trying to gather the family history. My family has a great history...but I only know part of it.

All I am asking for is for you scott/irish ,out there...maybe some Scandinavians to look up the name and let me know what you find.

Stephens for the father side.

Macleod, Maclure, McClure for the feminine side. I need help!

Bump

My father's side apparently came here from Ireland in the middle 1800's but as I said, there are hints that the root name is actually Scandinavian. The toughest part of the search is that many people changed their name coming into Ellis Island back in the day so...this is where our search breaks down. We can take my father's family back to about the point of arrival and no further.

I really would appreciate some help on this.

My mother's side is pretty well documented so that one is not the issue. Is there any advice out there on how to pursue this adventure in genealogy? I'd like to know more history on my father's side but not sure where to look now. We have tried all the websites but there is still this gray area when we try to go beyond the arrival in USA.

BTW, Stephens City Virginia was incorporated in 1887 so the timeline we have come up with for arrival is just about right.

Hate to break it to you but every-bodies family goes back to the 700s and beyond.
