On Thursday, Syria severed all Internet connections to the outside world for a total of 40 minutes. The outage wasn't anywhere as significant as when Egypt and Libya flipped their respective switches, but it showed the country's government is testing how it can flex its censorship muscles if need be.

Again, it's not clear if President Bashar al-Assad's administration is planning a complete Internet outage, but it would appear that is being considered. Either way, all 61 Internet networks routed though Syria's state telecoms organisation, Syrian Telecommunications Establishment (STE) were withdrawn from the global routing table, according to Internet monitoring firm Renesys

Syrian Army defeats Israel-backed terror gangs in Damascus

On 20 January, Syrian state television reported that the country’s army had cleared the Al-Midan area of the capital of armed groups. The forces regained control of most parts of the neighbourhood following heavy clashes with armed gangs. Government forces confiscated ammunition and vehicles equipped with machine guns from the armed opposition.

While some Western agencies, like Reuters, were echoing the Free Syrian Army’s propaganda about an “inexorable” rebel advance inside Damascus, what seemed especially inexorable on Friday 20 July was the destruction of groups who infiltrated into the capital. Syrian TV released a video showing the bodies of Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters in the area of Qaboun, ensuring that many of them were “terrorists from other Arab countries”.

A report from Syrian television, which showed soldiers in the sub-district of al-Zahra in Al-Midane, said that the army had declared this area safe and asked residents to return home. In this sense, the quick and easy victory of Syrian forces in Damascus obviously has served to reassure the population and Assad’s foreign allies. Apparently, the thousands of rebels who entered the city were unable to seize it, but they were able to create insecurity and make the news.

I've got to put this out there, why is it we dont trust our (western) news agencies but we trust the state agencies news teams in the conflicted country. Seems kinda hypocritical to me. None of them can be trusted as far as i'm concerned

Some 40 Wahabite broadcasters from Saudi Arabia would also be mobilized to falsify reality on the ground.



Finally, the NATO media have become obsessed with the alleged Syrian chemical weapons stockpile, since they suppose that efforts to secure these weapons offer an obvious pretext for invasion. Some commentators have cited the role of the CIA last year in Libya in seizing control of weapons stockpiles while Qaddafi was still in power.

At the United Nations, Russia and China have once again vetoed NATO’s thinly veiled call for bombing, invasion, and war at the expense of the Syrian people. Abstentions from Pakistan and South Africa, despite heavy duty arm-twisting by the United States, show that Syria is in no way isolated. As long as the NATO bloc cannot use the Security Council for its purposes, it will be difficult to organize an Iraq-style coalition of the willing to carry out this aggression.


Therefore, at least for the next several weeks, we may see continued attempts to destroy the Syrian state below the threshold of conventional war, without calling in NATO bombers and infantry brigades. In these efforts, information warfare, media manipulation, video fakery, and similar techniques are destined to play a central role along with terrorism, assassinations, and high-profile military stunts. But by understanding how NATO wages psychological warfare, it is possible to defeat the aggressors.
