That's a great point, Here is an example, Uniden. In the late 80's I bought my parents a Uniden cordless phone which my dad still uses in 2012. In the 90's they obviously decided that their product was too good quality wise. Ever since, every time I buy a Uniden cordless, they seem to die in 2-3 years. Even though it said it had appropriate approval etc. The thing is this cheap quality crap doesn't just cost to replace but you can't sue for the other damage it does, like the cost of fixing my phone line for instance. |

They are engineered to fail so you have to buy all over again. It pisses me off that people are getting ripped off by this shit. I've repaired computers, tv's, dvd players, laptops, network switches, lawn sprinkler systems, video cards are the worst, you name it. If it has capacitors in it and it was cheap, it will fail within 3 years. You can see the caps that bulge or leak. Just replace them and keep using the equipment. We were even asked to give more attention to those components. I think it's the whole "honor" thing in Japan that keeps companies there honest. It's not honor, it's strictly business. Toyota knows that the dodge customers who are smart enough to move on to a new supplier after getting screwed by shit quality may indeed shop for a toyota next time. Any myths about japanese honor evaporated with tepco and fukushima. |

Dont believe the hyperbole. The newest LEDs haven't been around long enough to prove that they will last 20 years. Well actually you can prove it. I have a LED lighting factory here in China and everything is determined by the quality of the components you are selecting that will determine the final product quality. We are testing the products in socalled aging tests. And these are quite accurate. High temps, low temps, humidity, exposure to sunlight, acidity etc etc all can quickly age a product where it can be easy to calculate the final lifetime expectancy. Right now we can safely say our products last 50.000 hours and up. Which is around 16 years at 8 hours a day People claiming 20 years are perhaps right too but only if you do not turn them actually on ;) All honesty is of course to mention that lifetime expectancy is determined by a gamma of operational and environmental variable that are much diffrent in Alaska compared to Florida. And this goes for most any product. |

And the mid-range PSUs with a fan are too noisy and their fans usually don't last (Cooler master even put sleeve bearing fans, even in their "top" models, as far as i know. total peaces of crap). |
