warriorsbond User ID: 18677608 United States 07/23/2012 10:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is in my city. They passed an ordinance tonight to ban all scrappers, scavenging, garbage picking. The city had regulations on the books governing this, like a lisence, a yellow flashing light on the vehicles, etc. Dozens of families have lost their income because of this ordinance. Quoting: tiger1 This ordinance is absolutely draconian. For example, if your neighbor throws out a real good 10 speed bike, that just needs an innertube, and you grab it for your kid, you can go to jail. If you walk anywhere, and pick up some cans on the way, you can get arrested. While I am not a scrapper like the real scrappers in my city that work very hard for the money they do make, I am a criminal also, according to this new ordinance. While I walk my dog, Sheba, I pick up debris along my path, and put it in the nearest garbage can. There are always lot's of booze bottles lying around, and I pick them up before someone gets hurt stepping on them. I also pick up aluminum cans, but I put them in a bag, and take them home with me to add to what I save from the kids drinking soda at home. Now, for my efforts to clean up the walkways, and add a few cents when I turn in our cans, I can be arrested, fined, and jailed. The article will be in our local paper tomorrow morning nwitimes.com that sucks what city? |

More patronage jobs will be now opening up to pick up trash, now that the honest hard working scrappers have been legislated out of their jobs. Our city and county is corrupt. We have had over 60 democrat politicians get indicted and go to jail over the years. Back in the 1960's, Robert Kennedy said that Lake County Indiana was the most corrupt county in the country. Authorities extract money from whatever income streams are present in the economy. But, if times are hard and those streams are marginal the extraction/extortion kills the income stream activity entirely, so -> $0 to anyone. Then they have to get more creative and find some other activity to tax. Its a vicious circle, kind of an avalanche of increasing tax loading on anything anyone is doing. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1001568 They were already taxing the scrappers with a $100 a year permit. I guess they can collect more money by arresting and fining them. Anonymous Coward User ID: 12874463 Canada 07/23/2012 11:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You can donate it, but it's often just gonna get chucked away by them, while someone who needs it, or wants it, could have it and for free, while the so called discount charity store takes the free stuff and sells it back to the poor. Not to mention spending time and money driving it out to the drop off, for stuff less than it costs to deliver. But you go along on garbage day and theres people out patrolling the trash like wolves, not because they have a need, but because they are using it as a source of income. And then you see people have gone through the garbage piles and made a mess and left it in a disarray that the trash/recycle guys will not pick up, then it lays there for a week or so, and gets spread all over the yard and road. I go scavenging. I call it voluntary community landfill diversion exercises. I have a list and if theres something I need, it's free for the taking so I feel no guilt, the people would rather someone take it than having to toss it out anyway. Alot of it is esentially junk to them but I am handy and can fix stuff up and refurbish it, or disassemble it for something partial within that I want. The keyboard I'm typing on was left beside a clothing drop off bin, that dosen't even take anything other than clothes. I spent a long time cleaning it before I felt comfortable using it, and I still eyeball the thing a little, wondering about its sanitary state. well the other day I found about $60 worth of dishes in a box by the road on garbage day, there was some assorted staffordshire bone china pieces in good shape with no cracks or chips, and just some wear on the gold gilding. And a bunch of other pieces of earthenwar that I took. The stuff I don't need or want I can give out as presents. I just do it casually, when I feel like it, and take the dog for the walk, as alabi. I just walk around till I see something of value, and I don't mess up their trash piles or root throuh their bags. Got a couple hundred bucks worth of valueable useful stuff the last couple months, that would have either gone to some garbage troll or gotten landfilled. |

tiger1 (OP) User ID: 6269153 United States 07/25/2012 09:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There probably have been lots of complaints from people having their garbage scattered everywhere by the scrappers...I called the police to get a guy out of one of my dumpsters before...I threw trash over the top and it landed on him, and he yelled at me! Quoting: BRIEF We have had that problem too, but it was the unregistered scrappers coming over the state line causing the problem, not the city registered ones. FYI, we are frequently the dumping ground for murder victims also. A little over a month ago, a teenage girl was murdered by her stepfather right across the state line, and her body tossed into a dumpster 2 blocks from me. I called on a scrapper once. Him and his buddy, both drunk, pulled a large window out into the middle of the alley right behind my driveway, and smashed the glass out on the pavement. They wanted the aluminum frame. Before I put up the gates across my driveway in the back, I had a scrapping thief come into my yard, and attempt to steal my stuff. He had the contents all on his truck except for 1 thing. I ran out with the dog and the gun, and convinced him it was in his best interest to put everything back where he took it from. He was not local. He was from across the state line. I know a lot of the regular scrappers around here. They are mostly out of work people in my neighborhood. Some of them, an elderly couple for example, walk around the neighborhood and pick up cans to supplement their S.S. checks. Another one, who is blind in one eye, does odd jobs like cutting lawns, raking leaves, and doing various other odd jobs for people in addition to picking up cans. These people are no problem, but yet they are now criminalized. Last Edited by tiger1 on 07/25/2012 09:29 AM Praise God from Whom all Blessings flow !!! |
