My friends laugh at me for checking even if I've watched them unload it. I just call it redundancy; it's not that I don't trust them, it's just that I want to be 100% sure that it won't be one more of those accidental "unloaded" shootings... if you catch my drift.

The times ive read or heard about stories about people forgetting one is in the chamber and it then going off because of poor trigger discipline etc.

IMO, pistols, pump actions, lever actions and bolt actions should always be cycled a few times even if you have looked down into the receiver and the barrel and it looks clear.

Certain weapons especially certain mag fed pistols and rifles like the mosin nagant sometimes look empty untill you cycle them and realize otherwise.
