Woman pulls a GUN on an electric worker because she didn't want a 'green' smart reader installed as she thought it was 'an invasion of her privacy'

A Texas woman did not want an electric worker to install an energy-efficient reader for her house, and so she responded with a clear threat of force.

Thelma Taormina got a gun from her Houston home when the meter-reader would not leave her property and he immediately ran away.

What prompted her to pack heat? Her privacy was being invaded.

'Our constitution allows us not to have that kind of intrusion on our personal privacy,

I don't care if they know I am running my washing machine, computer, or dishwasher. They can know that. What I don't want is for them to say I have used up my quota of power or for them to remotely turn off devices. If I want to run the ac at max power, send me the bill.

In the future they will be able to remotely turn your ac to another setting. At my house we keep it pretty cool, probably cooler than we should, but we pay the bills.

she's gonna get busted. the electric company has a "right of way" on personal poperty to maintain their equipment, so long as they dont damage the private property. the way to LEGALLY prevent the installation of the "smart box" is to build a box around the box containing the meter which still allows the meter to be read. just build an oblong box with a hinged lid that has a cutout the meter head can project through, but doesnt allow the lid of the meter box to be opened. they can read the meter, but they cant damage the box without your permission. secure the lid with a padlock and hasp. it has stood up in court several times in several states. the box and padlock are personal property. if you obscure the meter head, then they can have you charged with "theft of services", so make sure the whole glass "gum machine" pokes out, at least as far as the actual meter surface (the white face the dials are mounted on). the method of attachment to the structure must meet local building code, as must the construction of the box itself, so use CDX ply of 3/4 inch thickness, and 2x4 stud grade dimension lumber to build the box, then a layer of local code compliant tar paper, then siding like your home has. if you know a local contractor, ask them about method of attachment, but joist hangers attached to your wall studs should be compliant. dont forget to caulk the sides and bottom, and install drip flashing at the top (these are to prevent water damage to YOUR home).

How about getting a large and very aggressive dog and then conveniently never be around to confine the dog when the meter reader comes?

I called my local Energy company to find out more and to tell them that my Dad and one other family member uses an oxygen machine "As needed" and they told me that our house would not be one to get a smart meter.

So, as long as you have anyone on life support or medical machinery you can opt out but you have to call your local energy company and tell them about the medical issues.
