Hypothetical question: Radius of a nuclear explosion in London on July 27
If TPTB would REALLY pull such a thing off on Friday (for ex. with the "missing" 500kT from the german submarine), how big of a blast radius/calculation time/explosive yield would such an explosion cause?

Just to understand, what range would cause:

- instant death (for ex.: up to 1 mile within 2 seconds);
- destruction of most buildings (for ex. up to 3 miles within 8 seconds);
- moderate damage to buildings;
- 1st degree burns;
- survival/uncontaminated area for the first 10 minutes of the explosion (wind direction etc)

You see where I am going with this, right? Just to understand the "safe area" for the explosion....

Thanks

Fire ball OUT TO about 5 miles if one megaton, and blast wave to 10 miles !

Christ, I hope this doesn't happen. My son lives only a couple of miles from the stadium, and my sister ten miles southwest of it.

How about the fallout cloud travelling where (winds) and at what velocity?

Would such an explosion also cause an EMP ?

It's likely to be a 10Kt detonation, which means that anyone within a few miles is toast, anyone outside 10=20 miles will be OK, but the radiation cloud is the long term killer. Mostly anyone outside 30=40 miles from the blast zone should be fairly OK as the cloud would have hopefully dissipated to such an extent that exposure will be minimal and no major upturn in cancer rates will be seen. I'm over 75miles from the blast zone, so will OK to a certain extent. We'll only really be able to tell by how much over a period of decades.

Strangely enough i saw a movie this week on the movie network call "Dirty war" here is the story line.

After years of meticulous planning, a terrorist operation is reaching its final stages. The authorities have received no intelligence; they are in a race against time but don't yet know it. As the operation unfolds, we see the working lives of men and women directly affected by terrorism. Among them: a firemen worried about the increasingly dangerous conditions he and his men are expected to work under; the head of the anti-terrorist branch whose responsibility it is to protect London and a female Muslim detective brought into Scotland Yard to investigate another suspected terrorist cell. But it is too late to stop the attack. Outside Liverpool Street station suicide bombers detonate a large bomb, killing scores of commuters and sending a radioactive plume high into the morning sky. For the police, a desperate struggle to find and stop secondary attacks begins. For the fire service, the difficult and dangerous task of carrying out search and rescue in a heavily contaminated area. And for emergency service controllers, a mammoth operation to contain and decontaminate thousands of terrified people caught up in the aftermath of the explosion. Based on extensive research, DIRTY WAR asks whether as a nation we are prepared to face such an attack.

A creepy film for sure. Why they choose this week to play it i have no idea.But it is well worth the watch.

That really is the most "anal" question ever posed on here.

There is no "SAFE AREA" for a nuclear explosion. You are either in it or not.

The factors that control devastation from a nuclear device would be altitude of detonation, size of detonation, and wind direction.

Being only a few miles from the stadium I will be sure to let you know if it happens.

Your son should move over to your sister and - bring the tomatoes in.
