The fighters, at the airbase in West End Road, Ruislip, are tasked with providing air cover for the duration of the London games. They remain on the ground except for technical reasons or to respond to incidents such as this. RAF spokesman, Sqdn Ldr Richard Willis said: "We can confirm that one Typhoon launched shortly before 12.30pm today. "This was in response to a commercial aircraft that was out of communication with air traffic control services. "Communications were quickly restored; no further action was required. An extensive air restriction zone is in place in the south east of England, with pilots required to follow strict regulations. |
