Curiosity will rock the world! Mars Rover UPDATES - - October 13 latest Martian panorama..
T-11 days!! Are you going to be in or around one of these cities between July 26 & August 9: Atlanta, Columbus, Boston, Detroit, Indianapolis, Austin, Orlando, or Houston? If so, check out the very large red boulders that have been left in each city

:marsCuriosityjul:

Mars Science Laboratory (MSL, or Curiosity) is a Mars rover launched by NASA on November 26, 2011. It is currently en route to the planet, scheduled to land in Gale Crater at 05:31 UTC on August 6, 2012. Its objectives include searching for evidence of conditions favorable to life, studying the Martian climate, studying Martian geology, and collecting data for a future manned mission to Mars....

Re: Curiosity will rock the world! Mars Rover UPDATES - - October 13 latest Martian panorama..
When will we see Curiosity's first images?

Numerous people have asked me when the first pictures will come back from Curiosity after landing. I sought out an official answer today. The short version is that it depends. It's most likely going to be about two and a half hours after landing. But it could be as early as minutes after landing, or as long as half a day after ("midday" California time).

Here's the longer version of the answer:

If we are very lucky, Curiosity will manage to transmit its first image during its first communication session with the Odyssey orbiter, minutes after landing. If so, the image will be a thumbnail (reduced-resolution) version of a photo taken from the front Hazcam. This is one of the cameras mounted to the rover's belly, and it's a black-and-white camera with a fisheye lens. As such it'll see a wide area, both the terrain right in front of the rover in reach of the arm, and the horizon in the distance (unless the rover is very tilted). However, as a thumbnail, it won't be very detailed: it will be only 128 pixels square. For comparison, here is Spirit's very first front Hazcam image taken after she put six wheels on soil, at 128 pixels. Curiosity's Hazcams have the same design as Spirit's.

During the next Odyssey overflight, near 1:00 in the morning California time (0800 UTC), Curiosity may transmit a compressed full-resolution rear Hazcam image. "Compressed" here means that its data volume is reduced using some lossy compression scheme, similar to JPEG compression. That'll be 1024 pixels square....

Mars orbiter repositioned to phone home Mars landing
July 25, 2012

NASA scientists have successfully adjusted the Mars Odyssey spacecraft’s orbital location to be in a better position to provide prompt confirmation of the August landing of the Curiosity rover.

NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) spacecraft carrying Curiosity can send limited information directly to Earth as it enters Mars’ atmosphere. Before the landing, however, Earth will set below the martian horizon from the descending spacecraft’s perspective, ending that direct route of communication. Odyssey will speed up the indirect communication process....

hi

Saturday, July 28, 2012 10:55:09 AM

Tonight the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft is scheduled to perform a very small course adjustment, called Trajectory Correction Maneuver 4 (TCM-4).

Around 10 p.m. PDT (1 a.m. EDT), two brief thruster firings totaling about seven seconds will adjust the spacecraft's trajectory to better hone in on Curiosity's target entry point into the Martian atmosphere. This course adjustment will be the fourth performed during MSL's journey between Earth and Mars. The maneuver will turn the spacecraft to its final attitude and mark the start of Curiosity's final approach to the Red Planet.

Latest Photos From Opportunity on Mars

Opportunity is roving at the north end of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour Crater. Progress was again impacted by a second safe mode entry by the Mars Odyssey orbiter. With normal Ultra-High Frequency relay with Odyssey restored, Opportunity was able to drive on Sol 3019 (July 21, 2012).

That drive, of over 138 feet (42 meters), was a "V" trajectory with the rover first driving toward the small impact crater named "Sao Gabriel" for mid-drive imaging, then a near reverse drive away toward the geologic cut called "Whim Creek....

Mars Rover Curiosity Will See Red Planet As Never Before
02 August 2012

The huge NASA rover slated to land on Mars Sunday night (Aug. 5) is expected to give scientists and laypeople alike some amazing views of the Red Planet.

The 1-ton Curiosity rover, the heart of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission, will try to determine if Earth's neighbor is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life. To help address this question, the six-wheeled robot is carrying 10 science instruments — and a wealth of high-tech camera gear...
