How far away is mars?






This page shows a scale model of the solar system, shrunken down to the point where the Sun, normally more than eight hundred thousand miles across, is the size you see it here. The planets are shown in corresponding scale. Unlike most models, which are compressed for viewing convenience, the planets here are also shown at their true-to-scale average distances from the Sun. That makes this page rather large - on an ordinary 72 dpi monitor it's just over half a mile wide, making it possibly one of the largest pages on the web. This means you'll have to do a bit of scrolling if you want to find the planets, but don't despair....

Tonight’s the night. If all goes right with the most audacious plan ever conceived to land a probe on another planet, Curiosity Rover’s wheels will crunch into Martian soil at 12:31 a.m. (Central time) Monday morning. One of the first things the probe will do on arrival is take a picture, get on the phone and e-mail it to its best friends back on Earth. You’d do the same, right?

At the one hour mark, I'll start getting my fellow glp'ers to pin this thread so that this thread remains at the top. I've recently watched videos about how some scientists think the crater chains on mars were formed by static discharge and lighntning.

Very informative videos, I'll go see if I can locate them and post a few links as the info in the videos is compelling enough to give it further thought.

when the people ask about the first images, they mean COLOUR full resolution images, not haz cam pcitures.

So i guess it will be a the very least half a day after landing before images start coming in.
