If you really want to start the OS wars, the rover's two computers are based around pre-Intel "G3" chips.

Technically, yes....

Designed on a MS operated computer, yes. Controlled by a MS flight OS, no.

OP in above post: I'm not into OS WARS, just stated my thoughts about upgrades and reliability of certain computer code.

I'd as soon not have Windows or OSX on any mission-critical system. Or any embedded system. Too many automated house-keeping tasks, too much memory management and the rest handled according to the judgment of the shell program.

Give me strict C code, with a basic GUI thrown on as an afterthought for maintenance tasks.

Picture doing a remote software upgrade. Now picture doing it when the machine you're upgrading is a robotic rover sitting 350 million miles away, on the surface of Mars. That's what a team of programmers and engineers at NASA are dealing with as they get ready to download a new version of the flight software on the Mars rover Curiosity, which landed safely on the Red Planet earlier this week. 'We need to take a whole series of steps to make that software active. You have to imagine that if something goes wrong with this, it could be the last time you hear from the rover,' said Steve Scandore, a senior flight software engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 'It has to work,' he told Computerworld. 'You don't' want to be known as the guy doing the last activity on the rover before you lose contact.

Im viewing it on a 32 LCD monitor, it's really amazing to visualize. Thanks for the link IWTB.

I find it ridiculous that there is another thread claiming a road is shown in the image. I grew up in the Mojave Desert, it is a sand wash.

I guess some people have never seen a desert in real life.

So am I to understand you think this may be a road?. Can I help you to realize how huge this road would be?

Ask yourself common questions, NASA will provide details:

How far are the rim hills in the photo?
What would be the distance per pixel measurement at that distance?
Equate distance per pixel X pixels per width of road,

Miles wide.....

Just use google earth at ground level in the Death valley area of California, there will be sand washes photo'd in the background highlighted by alluvial planes.....

Oh, and there are no trees on mars at the poles either, mars is amazing but supports nothing like what we have here on Earth.

President Barack Obama made a phonecall from the White House to California this morning to congratulate the Mars Science Laboratory team on a job well done, a week after the one-ton Curiosity rover touched down on the Martian surface.

"I just wanted to call to say congratulations to the entire Mars Science Laboratory team and really all of JPL on last Monday's incredible success," Obama said during the phonecall that was patched into a loudspeaker at mission control in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif....

Mars Science Laboratory (MSL, or Curiosity) is a Mars rover launched by NASA on November 26, 2011. It is currently en route to the planet, scheduled to land in Gale Crater at 05:31 UTC on August 6, 2012. Its objectives include searching for evidence of conditions favorable to life, studying the Martian climate, studying Martian geology, and collecting data for a future manned mission to Mars....

Curiosity Landing: What's With All the Peanuts?

Peanuts, the legume and not the lovable 1960s comic strip, experienced a surge in popularity last week as the world watched engineers in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) eating handfuls for good luck during Curiosity’s landing on Mars.

It’s a long-standing tradition dating back to 1964. Just before Ranger 7 launched to the moon on July 28, mission manager Harris Schurmeier handed out peanuts to ease tensions. He figured chewing or playing with them on the table would give his team something else to focus on.
Read full article here:

[link to news.discovery.com]

What a great way to provide stress reduction. Transferring stress to the jaws when crunching the peanuts and doodling or playing around with them as a slight diversion.

NASA | The QWIP Detector; an Infrared Instrument

[link to youtu.be]
Published on Aug 16, 2012 by NASAexplorer

All objects emit infrared radiation and the characteristics of the infrared radiation are primarily dependent on the temperature of the object. One of the unique features of the new Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector (QWIP) instrument technology is the ability to, what engineers call "band gap." This means it can spectrally respond to specific wavelengths. This video shows the evolution of taking this instrument from inception, to testing on the ground and from a plane, and ultimately to a NASA science mission. The applications are range from finding caves on Mars to looking for thermal pollution in rivers or residual hot spots in forest fires, or monitoring food spoilage.

Wow! Two New Videos Show Curiosity’s Touchdown and Heat Shield Hitting Mars

Wow, this is better than any theatrical movies of fictional ships landing on Mars, because this is REAL! The images and videos from the Mars Descent Imager (MARDI) camera on the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft keep getting more amazing as the science team goes through their data and refines all the awesome action events from landing that the camera was able to capture. The video above is from a sequence of images which shows Curiosity’s heat shield slamming into the surface and raising a cloud of dust!! MARDI took the images while the rover was still suspended on a parachute and, of course, after the spacecraft had jettisoned the heat shield.

[link to www.youtube.com]

And another great video below is of Curiosity gently touching down on Mars. This was also taken by MARDI and is a higher resolution version that what was previously available.
