EarthSky came up with a nice article today

Beat up planet Mars has more than 635,000 craters

Mars is a beaten and battered planet. Astronomers have been peering for centuries at the violent impact craters created by cosmic buckshot pounding its surface over billions of years. But just how beat up is it?

This video steps viewers through a portion of the choreography needed to land NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. It starts with a computer simulation from NASA's Eyes on the Solar System program and uses actual images from Curiosity's Mars Descent Imager. It ends with a high-resolution color image from Curiosity's Mast Camera.

Re: Curiosity will rock the world! Mars Rover UPDATES - - October 13 latest Martian panorama..
"We must now reconsider and question all the successes scientists are so proud of. Is true progress a matter of sending spacecraft to other planets? And to do what, after all? To exploit their resources and introduce the same disorder we have created on earth? Why go and disturb the entire universe now? There is nothing wrong with wanting to explore the cosmos, but not before we have understood and resolved certain things here on earth. People have no respect; they think they are free to go anywhere without concern for the upheavals they cause. But one day they will pay dearly for this violence. As long as scientists have no other goal but to give people the means to assault nature, to dig it up and exploit it, with no consideration whatsoever for the damage they do, they have no right to be proud of the so-called progress they bring about for civilization."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21409302

Space IS Earth.

No more than we can afford to ignore the fact that we are living on a changing planet with a fragile biome, can we afford to ignore that this same planet is in a changing solar system about an energetic but temporary nuclear reaction.

What we study "out there" tells us just as much about what is "right here."

First Drive for Curiosity Rover an “Historic” Moment

Any rover only gets one ‘first’ drive, and this historic moment has now occurred for the Curiosity Mars rover. “These are historic photos,” said rover driver Matt Heverly, “since there is only one place where your tracks start.”

“It is a really big moment,” said Curiosity Project Manager Pete Theisinger. “We built a rover. Unless the rover roves, we haven’t really accomplished anything.”

Re: Curiosity will rock the world! Mars Rover UPDATES - - October 13 latest Martian panorama..
Small rant, not about this thread, just about JPL & NASA & CALTECH.

Extensive testing in the labs, in the deserts of California and repeated re-testing before this thing was even considered to be feasible..... They didn't hesitate when they had the rover here on earth to just grab the software and drive the damn thing. They drove it, tried to break it to see what it could and couldn't do...and they did multi tasking of driving and camera analysis as well as firing the laser ....ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

The rover made the softest landing ever, and now they decide to baby the damn thing.

In my opinion, if the rover didn't land, switch to second harddrive containing drive commands, drive 500' minimum, while taking pictures and firing lasers all within the first 24 hours of touchdown, then it is a failire...And THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH SCIENCE AND THE GOVERNMENT.

It took two weeks to drive 20'. We have less than 100 photos of quality. One rock analysis. One weather report.

I don't understand how this thing just sits there, day after day and we call that progress?. The rover should have been miles away by now and sent reams of data to storage. I could have drove an RC car up that damn mountain and back in two weeks and been another mile away by now.

Lately NASA stands for " Needs Another Special Analysis"

Thank you Isis7 & IWTB, I really do love our space missions and our space program. I also appreciate the input of others who share their wonderment and musings about our endeavors as humans.

I probably should keep my rants out of this thread, and realized that it will take two years to drive to the top of that mountain. It is stated as the end goal of the mission and I'd probably wreck the damn thing if I was driving it.

I Look forward to more news about the mission.

Have a great weekend.
