You must ask yourself what they are feeding on. If they are gathering, they must have a food source. A crow will eat scraps of just about anything. They like just about anything a human has left and they will also eat carrion.
When one very young crow finds food, it could be quiet and eat it. It might do that, but then an older crow might appear and chase it away.
So it will call out to other young crows, "Here is food!"
Well in crow calls that is what it means. They will hear him but they will come and share in what he has found.
So if he keeps quiet he might get to eat as much as he wants, but maybe not. He can't be sure he might be watched, then he gets nothing.
So it is better in the long run to call out to other crows and share than to try to eat alone.
I think there might be a lesson in that for people, especially in a SHTF situation. Maybe it is better to share with others who can protect you than to go alone and take chances of someone bigger coming along.
