Re: ALERT!!! Possible Derecho for NY and Southern New England!!
we got one of these earlier this week already in REAL upstate ny... up here around canada. trees down all over, business signs knocked over, sand storms... pretty nasty stuff.

the sky went from looking like a normal thunderstorm coming (dark blue gray) to a weird blue green color. it was kind of unsettling to see. i could see the sand swirling around way off on the horizon before it even got windy where i was.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20434888

The one we had a few weeks ago had a green sky. It looked so weird, last time I saw a sky like that was in MO, and it was a tornado. Had a big tree fall over into my yard, missed the house and landed on a shed. There are lots of very old trees here, they don't do well in high wind.

Yup - "Derecho" is the fun new word in weather, so now every time there is a normal, summer t-storm coming, people will run around screaming "Derecho!!Derecho!!"

It'll pass....when the new buzzword comes along...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2579653

I agree. Never heard of a Derecho before. We used to call them summer storms. Lots of lightening, big thunder claps, and sometimes hail.

From a survivor of the one that hit the mid-atlantic a few weeks ago.

Get ya some food, gas, and a generator.

THX! What was it like for you.
 Quoting: JanJan

I'm in Maryland, it was horrible. We went to the basement because the winds were so strong. Trees were the worst, killing people in their homes by falling on them, killing people in their cars by falling on them. Even after the storms, trees were weakened, and still fell after the storm. Just like the suggestion, get food, gas, and a generator. The gas stations were shut down as there was no power. Grocery stores closed as they had no power. All the traffic lights out which caused traffic jams in the city. I've been in hurricanes, this was faster duration, and equally as strong. Just prepare.

Re: ALERT!!! Possible Derecho for NY and Southern New England!!
and there is another website I USED to post on where everyone is south of the Mason Dixon line or in Cali, and if I say "another 90 degree day here, can't sleep at night, it's really wearing on us" - they say "oh silly, what's 90 degrees, don't complain until you hit 105 like we do! 90 is nothing, count your blessings! We love it! 90 at the beach today!" And you know what, you'd like to just slap them silly. No, they can't conceive of anyone not having Central Air. Why don't you just buy another air conditioner? Can't your elderly relatives go to someone's house that's cooler? Yeah, I'm piling up Uncle Henry's oxygen tanks and going to see if someone will put him up for awhile. No. I have to buy another air conditioner, not pay a utility bill for myself, keep Uncle Henry hydrated, tell him to take off his flannels he keeps putting on cuz he thinks the fan is a breeze to protect himself from.....meanwhile at home I have rooms blocked off with sheets, moving fans strategically should be an Olympic sort, the constant sweating and irritability while trying to take care of others and work....

well, there, I feel better. It's just people don't GET it when something is happening that is not normal for you. Like if you have an EQ in S. Carolina and someone in Cali says "wow, 5.7 huh retards? That's not even a real quake. We do that for breakfast."

Northern New Yorkers don't tolerate heat well, a day that hits 90 is not all that common, and multiple days hitting 90 in a row can be lethal to us.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1369739

very true, same goes for W WA, we are not used to reg temps of 85-90 deg.
buuuut its like someone from WA driving to CA and it starts to rain and EVERYBODY slows down to 10mph on I-5 and 405.
lol
its like come on folks, its only rain. (well yes but they are not used to it and when it rains in CA, its like God turns the hose on FULL BLAST)

Just sojme info on a derecho storm for those who don't know what they are, like me lol.

Concidering they only happen about once sometimes twice a year, depending what region, I'm guessing you don't normally call them summer storms, as some have said here.

i have been in one a while back down in NC....not the normal thunderstorm.
it did damage like a tornado, but wide spread and the winds where all going one direction. it took things , cars trees and houses and pushed them....for about 1 mile.
this was in the early 80's and they did not have a name for it.
the news called it a wall of wind.

i am in brooklyn now and live on the second floor...sure would not want to see this kinda weather today.

Here in southern New England [Boston] this type of weather is common for June, July, August, into September, but especially mid summer. We have a continental / marine climate [moderated by the Atlantic Ocean] and it can get very hot and humid [subtropical] during the summer. High and low pressure systems collide and we get bad electrical storms with high winds. They don't usually last long.

The further away from the coast you get, generally the greater the possibility for tornados. In Massachusetts this means areas from Worcester westward into northwest CT, Hudson Valley N.Y., and most of New Hampshire and Vermont. And inland can get hotter for longer periods because they don't have any moderating influence from the ocean, but Northern New England [New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine] are hilly/mountainous and tend to be cooler.

Look out those in Ohio, Chicago, and surrounding areas. Around 2:30-3:30pm has the potential for the worst of it.

I had a feeling this one might be big and i don't think i am the only one. I am in the greater hartford area and there is already a shit load of CL-P (Connecticut Light & Power) trucks staging up around here. I have seen about 10 or more in the last hour and there is a few parked around me. the news has been warning us about this storm since yesterday. Time to top off the water and gas supplies. stay safe people.

Interesting also the CL-P website is down. [link to www.cl-p.com] ..
