I think what South Africa shows is the inherent problems of a multi-ethnic state. Whether it is a first world country or a third world country, racial resentments lurk just beyond the surface in so many places, and riots and violence or worse just seem a catalyst away.

I have no doubt things were terrible in the old days. I have no doubt things are terrible in the new days. But maybe rather than being politically correct, we should see that different cultures interact better when they have their own political space, and when they live apart.

I'm not saying integration is possible. It takes generations, a heavy commitment, and lots of tears. I'm just wondering if it is worth it.

And the people who did that to this family are animals.
