Today the taxi drivers are protesting/rioting in Madrid. Things aren't looking good. Massive tax hikes coupled with salery reductions and freezes. And naturally, every company able to seems to be taking advantage of the situation by making unneccesary redundancies and doubling thier desperate existing employee's workloads. The system needs to be re-examined from scratch. |

STOP OUTSOURCING!!! The winter will bring more contempt without food preparations. Spain needs to stop growing sunflowers and make those lands grow food to eat. Greece needs to return to the oceans to can fish for eating. |

That's France! lol Plenty of people grow food to eat here in southern Spain. Farming and fishing was their main way of life before the tourist boom of the 1980s started. They still farm and fish... it's part of the culture and way of life around here. Nothing like buying fresh cooked sardines down at the beach! Families and friends grow their own produce, keep chickens and goats and then swap different produce so they have a variety. Sadly, it's not the same once you head further inland. Life for people in some areas is getting really desperate. I just posted on one of Luisport's threads about a lady offering to sell her kidney! Many families are living together to share costs. Another story in The Olive Press (link on Luisport's thread) tells of 3 campsites on the Costa Tropical accepting pesatas as payment. We're moving back to England in mid August. We don't want to, my children grew up here and my husband and I still have work here BUT my son finished school in June and with youth unemployment as high as it is he has no future here. We came here so our kids could have a better childhood and they did but sadly it's now time to leave... hopefully not for too long. |

Alot of the patriotism goes into it (We are Greek! Strong people, always fought hard against etc etc.). Talk about being in the doodoo. Last Edited by ChillyNorth on 07/27/2012 11:15 AM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 20659845 Spain 07/27/2012 11:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Spain is not Greece. Some interesting stats:- Spain is the 4th largest economy in the European Union. Spain is the 12th largest economy in the world. Spain has traditionally been an agrarian economy. In fact, Spain is still the world's biggest producer of olive oil and third biggest producer of wine. Additionally, the nation is Europe's biggest producer of lemons, strawberries and oranges. Spain is among the top ten car manufacturing countries in the world. Spain has the second largest tourism industry in the world. Fertilizers and chemicals are the most prominent industry sectors in Spain. Whereas Greece represents about 2% of the Eurozone economy! For the 4th largest economy in Europe and the 12th largest economy in the world to have unemployment at these levels and probably on the brink of a bailout is a very, very frightening scenario... |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 13457940 United States 07/27/2012 11:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There are many reasons this happened. When you change a way of life by outsourcing, you remove your economic stabilizers. As Spain became more industrialized, the declining share of agriculture in the economy was evidenced by its declining share of the GDP. Agriculture accounted for 23 percent of GDP in 1960; for 15 percent, in 1970; and for 5 percent, by 1986. In addition, the character of Spanish agriculture in the 1980s had changed. It had become less a way of life and more a way of making a living. Even subsistence agriculture, already in steady decline, had become increasingly market oriented. [link to en.wikipedia.org] |
