The main reason why The Netherlands has 5 times less obese people than the U.S. | |

Even if I worked close to where I live, I could never bike to work in the summer because I would arrive drenched in sweat and in need of a new set of clothes! Quoting: ANHEDONIC Between 50 - 70 F humidity 50-60 If you bump the humidity up to 80%, that's April weather here in the Southeast. Summer, it's 95-110 F with either 20 or 90% humidity depending on what fronts are coming through. Even then, you still see a few folks biking closer into the cities. We'd get more folks cycling if the roads were set up for it. The few who do risk getting run over, especially on the back roads heading into and out of the city limits. Things aren't even set up well for walking except just in the downtown area and the one pedistrian overpass they built for one of the middle schools. Plus, there do tend to be a lot of teritorial dogs out in the county that will go after cyclists, walkers, and runners. It's the main reason you typically see walkers on the county back roads either carrying a sawn off broom handle or a pistol, and I've given up trying to go walking. The last time I tried was shortly after we bought our house, and I had two different large dogs start after me before I'd even gotten within fifty yards of their owner's property. That's not even counting coyotes, which have been getting more brash every year, and the odd and end half domesticated dog breed, half coyote pups some morons decide to raise. I'll stick to my collection of workout DVDs and weights, thanks. They're less effective, truth be told, but they're safer than trying to cycle, walk, or run where I happen to live. |

Quoting: Deiradella How'bout moving out ? Hubby and I tried living in city when we first got married. It was clostrophobic feeling for this country girl. As much as I might not like the neighbors' dog half a mile or so north and half a mile or so south of us, I need to see fields! And it does have some advantages: gardening and romping about in the yard with the children if you can catch the cool of the morning and afternoon between the time it's too hot and when the bugs start coming out. |

Quoting: Dutch Dude 913721 For every drivers lane there's a seperate lane for bikes. Cars > black lane Bikes > red lane I believe that. I don't think I will ever get to live in the Netherlands but I will definitely move back to Minneapolis simply because I could and would ride my bike EVERYWHERE. I didn't need to use my car unless I was going farther than say 10 miles or more and on summer days I would routinely bike 50 miles just to get out of the city. If you're ever in the U.S. you would probably enjoy Minneapolis. |

Quoting: Desert Fox Not at all. Europeans eat far better food than Americans by and large. Socialism and capitalism aren't enemies, they work best together. Luckily, we get very good attention when depositing our sacred seed by blond, front heavy Norwegian females. They are of course special trained for this. |

(female b*****) The food is partly to blame, and the expensiveness of the healthy alternatives, but that is not much of an excuse, as there are cheap ways to eat healthy enough to not get fat. Yes there are alot of fatties here in North America, mainly due to sows, who inflate the obesity statistics (much like thier male counterparts drive up the crime rate). However, there are many who are really into 'physical culture' just like in the netherlands and other places around the world. |

Didn't see one person on their cell phone while biking! If more Americans were forced to ride their bikes, you would surely see them on their phones. Most of us can't even assume the personal responsibility to put the phone down while driving something that can easily kill others. We would rather pass laws to try and stop the behavior. I have been without a license for a period of 4 years. Rode my bike to work every day, round trip of 12 miles. Through all the seasons. And I live in Wisconsin! (For those who don't know we truly have all 4 seasons here.) This period of time completely changed my attitude and outlook on life. I always had to smile when people would say to me, "man, it must suck to not be able to drive," to which I would reply "not really." I then would tell them think of all those who have to secure shelter and food everyday of their lives. It makes you genuinely appreciate what you have. Ahhh, seeing that video make me envious of the Netherlands! |

Also North America is much larger than Europe. Are cities also sprawl out much more than European cities. To get from one city to another in Canada is equivlant to crossing through countries in Europe. But why would you think of any of that, your just out to make yourself look superior to you North American brothers. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 12690803 07/28/2012 12:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The problem in the U.S. is high fructose corn syrup is added to everything, it is cheaper to buy dinner off the value menu at Micky D's than to buy vegetables, unless you live in a good size city or town close to a university biking is pretty much not an option due to having to get on interstates to get almost everywhere and no bike lanes on those. Actually, no bike lanes on most roads in the U.S. Some places don't even have sidewalks to walk on. Plus, some folks are just lazy as f****. Anyway, I have been to Amsterdam only once and absolutely loved it. I would love to go back and visit again one day. |
