I'm starting to think you don't live here... all I see is fat asses, young and old, on scooters and in their cars... Be carefull fellow countryman, this op will call you a traitor for being honest... I think he feels better by putting down others... that's a global disease of all chauvinistics... and also why wars exist. To all foreigners: yeah, sure, come and visit, it's nice here, but stay away from people like op and try and meet people with wider perspective...and do share some of your country's great aspects, as we all know you have. This OP certainly doesn't reflect any of the nice people I've encountered in the Netherlands. I think he's an imposter as well... No, I think he's genuine, just an asshole, we do have them here, but you probably will only encounter these assholes on internet, because in real life normal dutch will silence them with the spoken argument and assholes tend to be chickenshit when confronted with intellect. you see... silenced already. OP's gone, word is out: exercise and try to stay healthy under the circumstances your country provides! But stay away from unhealthy big mouths, even if some of their statements have some truth to it. Peace out. |

I hear that Bikes out number Cars 2 to 1... It is very kool idea and concept that works well for that country... I wish it would or could work that well here in Canada... but distance would become a huge factor quickly... and the snow... I wish we were setup more like European countries... but sadly we are not at all... |

This is more than 40% of the population. The figure includes 1.5 million who are classified as obese, says the CBS. Thirty years ago, just over a quarter of Dutch adults were too fat. Now twice as many people over the age of 20 are overweight or obese. For children the number has also grown. Around 11% are overweight or obese, compared with 4% in the early 1980s, says the CBS. That is a major part of the problem. Look at the picture that was on the bottom of this site the other day. Obama on a bike, while Putin is on a horse without a shirt on. Implying Obama is "gay" for riding a bike. That's the mentality. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12672712 Um, wouldn't that be your mentality or at least the way you perceived the photo? Many people ride bikes here in the States; California, Oregon, Massachusetts, NEW YORK, Texas (mainly Austin), CHICAGO, the list goes on, and on. That's a great way to meet your maker after you get your ass run over around here. If you ride a bike around here, it needs to be a harley. |

Fuck off. It's the distance plus infrastructure that makes a bicycle a worthy transportation device, plus, it costs over 2000 dollars to get your drivers license in the Netherlands + one month or more of driving lessons - while in the US it's a one day 50$ deal(last time I was there it was 25$). Pure and simple. Dutch culture is socially retarded and backward with racist national holidays such as Sinterklaas, plus the people are insanely docile compared to Americans. |
Americans are laze User ID: 1114424 Netherlands 07/28/2012 06:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, we here in Holland cycle most everyday, contrary to Americans who are lazy and drive to the Hamburgerstand with their fat bellies behind the wheel. Maybe they should all pay a visit to this country and cycle on the dikes along the windmills, tulips and coffeeshops. That would also save you money with these high gasprices. So get off your ass, grab your bike (if you have any) and follow the example of the Dutch. We are the most healthiest people in Europe. |

I'm sorry for this one guys... I'm afraid it's another 'True Dutch'. At the one I told to shut up: you're right, I didn't need to shut you up and I did misunderstood your post. But 'true dutch' sounds a lot like something Hitler could have said. You mean: with its origin from Holland, I now get it. However, I do think that also original dutch people are obese. Statistics always lie, as they are made to prove someone's point, also correct. But don't just believe your own eyes as your ego is able to make you see an illusion. But again; I'm sorry for jumping the conclusion on you, you are not like the quoted prick above. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 9718093 United States 07/28/2012 07:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In the U.S. people have the attitude that bicycles are for children. That is a major part of the problem. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12672712 Or the fact that the U.S. is how many times larger than The Netherlands? How many of us have to drive 15-45 miles to get to our jobs everyday? Not to mention climate.... In the winter months in various parts of the country, riding a bike is not possible. Riding a bicycle to get around from A to B for a large majority of Americans is simply not feasible when you consider how spread out things are and the distances involved. If I lived in a smaller urban area or a small city, I could definitely consider it. I have excellent metabolism so weight has never been an issue but I would consider biking as a good means of transportation, just as long as I don't get a DUI! This^^ I live just outside small town--"in the county" as we put it here. Everything here is spread out, though. It's 10 miles to my job, for instance. I would never in a million years let my kids ride bikes to school because a) They would have to leave way too early because of the distance and b) after leaving the house, it's 1 mile on a narrow, curvy road to the main road which is a 4-lane highway with a 55 mph speed limit. I would love to live where riding a bike most of the time makes sense, but this is not the place. |

And the menu's are way bigger also, a big order of frensh fries here in NL is the same as a small in US. Burgers a much bigger etc. Fastfood is also much cheaper. I mean, really, a McChicken for 1 dollar [link to www.mcdonalds.com] . We pay EUR 3,50. Furthermore, when we buy a Coke overhere, you can't refill it for free, in USA this is normal. |

We're not talking about a few exceptional people, but about big groups of people of a certain country. The video of the 80+ ladies I posted shows how tenthousands of 80+ women in the Netherlands get free care and are in good shape because they ALL kept themselves active during their live, compared to a FEW exceptions you from your country that you present. And yes, there's a huge stigma about obese Americans, and rightful so... just look at some live webcam and anyone can see it's not fiction.
