In the U.S. people have the attitude that bicycles are for children. That is a major part of the problem.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12672712 Or the fact that the U.S. is how many times larger than The Netherlands? How many of us have to drive 15-45 miles to get to our jobs everyday? Not to mention climate.... In the winter months in various parts of the country, riding a bike is not possible. Riding a bicycle to get around from A to B for a large majority of Americans is simply not feasible when you consider how spread out things are and the distances involved. If I lived in a smaller urban area or a small city, I could definitely consider it. I have excellent metabolism so weight has never been an issue but I would consider biking as a good means of transportation, just as long as I don't get a DUI! Quoting: ANHEDONIC This^^ I live just outside small town--"in the county" as we put it here. Everything here is spread out, though. It's 10 miles to my job, for instance. I would never in a million years let my kids ride bikes to school because a) They would have to leave way too early because of the distance and b) after leaving the house, it's 1 mile on a narrow, curvy road to the main road which is a 4-lane highway with a 55 mph speed limit. I would love to live where riding a bike most of the time makes sense, but this is not the place.
