Around 6.5 million Dutch people are overweight, according to figures released on Tuesday by the central statistics office CBS.

This is more than 40% of the population. The figure includes 1.5 million who are classified as obese, says the CBS.

Thirty years ago, just over a quarter of Dutch adults were too fat. Now twice as many people over the age of 20 are overweight or obese.

For children the number has also grown. Around 11% are overweight or obese, compared with 4% in the early 1980s, says the CBS.

Many people ride bikes here in the States; California, Oregon, Massachusetts, NEW YORK, Texas (mainly Austin), CHICAGO, the list goes on, and on.

Yes, we here in Holland cycle most everyday, contrary to Americans who are lazy and drive to the Hamburgerstand with their fat bellies behind the wheel.

Maybe they should all pay a visit to this country and cycle on the dikes along the windmills, tulips and coffeeshops.

That would also save you money with these high gasprices.

So get off your ass, grab your bike (if you have any) and follow the example of the Dutch.

We are the most healthiest people in Europe.

Or the fact that the U.S. is how many times larger than The Netherlands? How many of us have to drive 15-45 miles to get to our jobs everyday? Not to mention climate.... In the winter months in various parts of the country, riding a bike is not possible.

Riding a bicycle to get around from A to B for a large majority of Americans is simply not feasible when you consider how spread out things are and the distances involved.

If I lived in a smaller urban area or a small city, I could definitely consider it. I have excellent metabolism so weight has never been an issue but I would consider biking as a good means of transportation, just as long as I don't get a DUI!
