They should have invested and never touched the principal. Just live off the interest earnings.

1 million at 5% interest is $50,000. They could have sustained this for ever. Instead. Gone.

There are safe ways to invest long-term that will yield better than 5%, but yeah, like I said it's a nest egg and a way to get a good start. Buy/build a house so you can live comfortably, I'm all for that and you probably won't lose there anyway. Beyond that, just live within your means.

Her locks were yellow as gold:
Her skin was as white as leprosy,
The Night-Mare LIFE-IN-DEATH was she,
Who thicks man's blood with cold.

UPDATE:

Since winning the lottery in the Spring of 2010, a lot has happened to Leroy Fick & son Jeff of Auburn, Michigan. The Ficks blew thru their $2 million winnings ($850,000 after taxes), and both ended up in prison. Leroy was sentenced to 45 days in jail for illegally possessing a prescription painkiller in early January of 2012. In October 2011, Leroy’s son Jeff stole a 90-year-old man’s car. Jeff was sentenced to 180 days in jail, and an additional 185 days deferred. Upon his release, he will also serve three years of probation.

First thing you do is invest 1/2 your money into something SAFE and DO NOT touch it. Then: Buy/build a nice home that you will live in the rest of your life. Pay off any debts. Buy yourself a nice vehicle.

Without a mortgage, monthly debt payments and a car payment, anyone can live comfortably off the interest payments on the rest of the money.

I know someone who won 22 million dollars. They bought 10 acres of land in the middle of nowhere, built a 5,000 sq ft home, bought a couple of new cars and KEPT THEIR DAY JOB.

I think the biggest crime committed was the government taking one million four thousand dollars of his 2 million dollar win. He won and got less than half after state and federal taxes? I'd say the government was the real winner.

I saw that episode awhile ago and saw they'd be broke before they knew what hit them.

Problem is, they didn't know HOW to have money. So they spent their winnings as if six figures made them part of the "elite". Which to them, any six figure amount, even if it was $150,000, would do.

I have a friend who's a famous underwater/nature photographer. He became wealthy overnight. We were talking one time on a dive trip. He said he knew how to be poor, but not how to "be rich".

It is hard to have sympathy for that kid though. He should've got himself some teeth and some book learnin' on economics.

Oh well, easy cum, easy gone forever...

1. i don't have sympathy at all for these knuckleheads, nor should any of you

2. it's 2012. earning 5% safely is damn near impossible. this coming from someone who makes his career helping Advisor's place safe money assets into play for their clients. please check the 10 yr Treasury for a reference.

3. $850k isn't that much money in a big city. It's a house and two cars, but you still need a day job.

Go to hawaii buy a nice plot of land and grow your own fruits and veggies...

no better way to live...

excellent weather all year round...
Beyond one's own mind there is no dazzling light to come shining in from outside to wake one up. If one recognizes one's own intrinsic State as pure from the beginning and only temporarily obscured by impurities, and if one maintains the presence of this recognition without becoming distracted, then all the impurities dissolve. This is the essence of the Path-namkhai norbu.

Why is there a legend about the descent of Christ into hell? The Teacher addressed the lower strata of the astral world, saying: Why, by cherishing earthly thoughts, bind oneself eternally to Earth? And many revolted in spirit and rose higher.

"In March of 2012 Leroy Fick pleaded guilty to three counts of illegal possession of fireworks, three counts of operating a motor vehicle on a restricted licence, allowing an unlicensed person to drive, and driving 97 mph in a 55 mph zone. In addition to all these charges, there was a lot of controversy when Fick continued using his food stamps after winning the lottery. The state has now approved a bill preventing any future lottery winners from receiving public food assistance. As for the money…it’s all gone."

LOL wow... I hate to laugh , but damn ..

I know that one day I will win the lottery, I've known in my gut , unfortunately just not WHEN.. lol

I've done alot of studying online, reading and planning for when I actually do so that I don't fall into the trap that a good majority of people fall into when they win the lottery.. I already have a handful of investments in mind, so that I'll be not only able to live nicely without ever wanting, but to ensure future generations of my family will have the same opportunity and be taken care of ..

What is also nice, is that a few of the investment ideas that I'd make reality, would also help alot of other familes out by investing in them and creating more businesses that in turn will employ Americans that NEED jobs...

I wonder if there are any in-house psychics here who are legit, who can forsee any timeframe of reference for me ? lol
Because I'm hoping it happens soon, 'cause I am ready to get to work , help my family out , and help others become as fortunate as I am hoping I will one day soon be ...
