Anyone here into Civil war music ?
I just love music from that war....Out of all the wars in human history that one particular war has the best music. If you do a search for Civil war music you'll find there are dozens and dozens really beautiful songs from that war.

When Johnny Comes Marching Home is my favorite out of them all.

Oh and im NOT into wars ...i just love that music from that war. That is all.

Re: Anyone here into Civil war music ?
Hi Dr Strange!!

I'm not really familiar with Civil War Music, but an old-timey tune I used to play in fiddle contests was "Soldier's Joy". I eventually "discovered" that there are words to the tune, and I learned that "Soldier's Joy" referred to a wounded soldier's choice between whiskey and morphine for pain relief.

My dad's all time favorite tune, the one he wanted played at his funeral last year, was "Loreena", another of the Civil War beauties.

I heard that part of the Civil War "experience", was listening to the songs of the other side. These songs may have had more impact than what is normally thought.

Are you familiar with Stephen Foster's song "Hard Times", now that Civil War song gave me the chills when I first heard it sung by Emmylou Harris.

Re: Anyone here into Civil war music ?
The sadder the folk song the better I am drawn to it. In a prior lifetime I must had been there on a battlefield in some way perhaps as a nurse tending to the wounded and dying. Even the song The Green Fields of France gave me goosebumps. That folk song is about Willie McBride who is only 19 a fallen soldeir in 1916. The ending has a real message even for today.

Re: Anyone here into Civil war music ?
just rented ted's stomach turner's meatballs at sgettysburg and gods and generals movies

all the generals on both sides were from west point

the flags were indistinguishable from each other and the original east indian company slave and opium ring's flag

at least turner got shot in meatballs at sgettysburg

what was it, like one in every 3 or 4 of the southland's white boys got killed in this shitfest

and then the army went after the indians next

doesn't take much to entertain some assholes

Re: Anyone here into Civil war music ?
There are a few good Civil War era songs, but I don't think they can compare to the soundtracks from "Air America" and "Good Morning Viet Nam." Viet Nam had both quantity and quality. And over all, WWII had the best quality. Mmmmmmm...White Cliffs of Dover, Over There, I'll Be Seeing You, Anchors Away, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, etc. Regardless, history in song should not be forgotten.

"bonnie blue flag"

Also, if you ever want to see me burst into tears, you can play the Ashkalan Farewell/Sullivan Bellou track from the soundtrack album "Civil War". From the PBS series.

The guy writes this wonderful letter about love, and his sense of duty, and describes how he'll come back to his wife as a breeze or a spirit. It was a true letter written by the guy. And...well...anyway...it always makes me cry.

Re: Anyone here into Civil war music ?
July 14, 1861
Camp Clark, Washington

My very dear Sarah:
The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days—perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more . . .

I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing—perfectly willing—to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt . . .

Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.

The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me—perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness . . .

But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . .

Sullivan Ballou was killed a week later at the first Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861.

Re: Anyone here into Civil war music ?
That was simply incredible ..those people then had such passion and romance in side of them. They had such strong spirits. That letter was truly moving. Now you see why i like music from that era. It had such heart ..you could almost feel the tears and pain in that music. Thank you so much for that letter from the soul. Soldier of soul.
