According to the book "the Hot Zone" Ebola incapacitates and kills too fast to cause a widespread outbreak.

However if it mutated so that it had a longer incubation period it might wipe humanity off the planet.

There are rumors of it going "Airborne", whereas with the usual Ebola, you have to come in contact with bodily fluids, this one might be spread like the flu...

That would be bad...

What would b interesting is to find out when this contagion started, or when the first case was reported.

Then we could determine the virulent period and back track to when it likely "began" and see if it corresponded to the opening ceremonies at the Olympics.

Wonder how closely they would line up...

A link between the natural reservoir of the virus and humans is apes.

People in the effected areas have a tendency to eat chimps or have sex with them, or both.

I have done my research. It's amazing there are two rocks put on top of each other on purpose in Africa.

We'll know pretty quickly if this is doom. It's in the capital now, not in some outback village where it takes 3-4 days to get anywhere.

IF (big if) this mutation has gone airborne we'll see a rapid spike in casualties. If not, then they have a chance to contain it.

Especially bad is if the info about "normal flu symptoms" turns out to be true.

Folks, if you see the numbers spike to 20, 40, 100 then it's time to bring in the tomato plants.

What's alerted me is the location of the infection...the capital. A big city hosting a virulent contagious disease is a Bad Thing.

In the original stories about this, before it was verified to be Ebola, they thought they had a "novel easily communicated" disease that might be airborne...

Then they found out it was Ebola, but it doesn't act like Ebola and the symptoms are unusual...

Like I said, rumors and unverified reports, but any mutation in the Ebola virus could be ugly, they better pray it's not airborne, because now that someone has died in the Capitol city, a densely populated area, it would spread like wildfire...

One good thing, the death toll (14) hasn't gone up for a few days, assuming we have the latest numbers...

That can be somewhat typical. I've watched Ebola before. There can be a lag in deaths/reported for a few days, then a big jump in the numbers. Guess we'll see soon enough.

Since this has unusual symptoms, this could be a mutated form.

If so, normal containment procedures may not work and this could become a major pandemic quickly.
 Quoting: DoorBert

No, it's not a mutated form, or else it wouldn't have come up as the Sudan strain when they did genetic testing. For example, in 2007, an Ebola outbreak occurred in Bundibugyo, Uganda which came up in tests as Ebola, but also an unknown strain. It was the first new strain in 14 years. Tests for these bugs are very precise. The thing is, Ebola is such a romanticized disease: people tend to focus on the more dramatic presentation of the symptoms like bleeding everywhere when in fact external bleeding only really occurs some of the time...
 Quoting: Shenten 7393269

I seriusly doubt they have had time to do a sequence test on it,but i still think this will peter out,i hope.

...a chimp or gorilla with Ebola will get sick. Ebola is a filovirus, which infects primates, primarily. This means that those animals are the victims, not the reservoir. The reservoir hasn't been conclusively pinned down, but it's been narrowed to a species of fruit bat and certain birds. These are animals that can hold the virus without showing symptoms (therefore, reservoirs). People have contracted this bug by just innocently exploring a cave.

Sex CAN transmit the disease, but so can spit, sweat, blood, urine and feces...

The latest outbreak of the disease started in the country's western district of Kibaale, around 200km west of Kampala.

The district is located about 50km from the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Stephen Bayaruhanga, health secretary of Kibaale, said on Monday that six more patients suspected to have contracted Ebola had been admitted to hospital.

He said that the cases had at first been concentrated in a single village, but are now been reported in multiple villages.

One victim - a health worker who had been transferred to the capital - later died.

The first victim of the latest outbreak was a pregnant woman in Kibaale district, about 170km (100 miles) west of Kampala.

It then spread at a funeral, Mr Museveni said.

There is no vaccine for the virus.
