Whether the fatality rate was previously 25% or 34%, it's way above that now (at least double if not triple). I guess there are a lot of factors involved -- the age and health status of the victims, the level of care they received, etc. We're not given much info, so we can only guess at why the fatality rate is so high in this outbreak compared to the last one.

Could legitimately be a different strain. DRC has
been the source for other outbreaks. Then again, it's
worth pointing out that the strain determination was
made by the Ugandan government lab. If faced with the
choice of admitting that their containment wasn't/isn't
as effective as they've claimed, or fudging the
determination, so it looks like it just popped up
coincidentally, Uganda might choose the latter. After
all, they both have identical symptoms, containment
procedures and treatments. Add in the fact that the
mortality rate is closer to the values quoted for Sudan,
and you have to wonder.

According to the distribution diagram, in the above link,
Bundibugyo ebolavirus has only been seen in south western
Uganda. It is also has one of the lowest morality rates.
Making it a good choice as a "separate outbreak".

KINSHASA, DR CONGO (BNO NEWS) — A serious outbreak of Ebola is believed to be responsible for at least six deaths in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, local and international health authorities said on Friday. It is unrelated to a deadly outbreak in neighboring Uganda last month.

Three samples taken from two patients were taken to the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in the Ugandan city of Entebbe where they tested positive for the Bundibugyo species of the deadly Ebola virus. Authorities in the region have so far reported 10 suspected cases, including six deaths, of which nine were in Isiro and one in Dungu.

Yes, that's a sad story, that the guy is shunned by his community even though he supposedly didn't have Ebola. However, the article doesn't mention what he actually had. Maybe another case of "throat flu", like the truck driver in Kenya?....

This is my two cents worth in all this....

I have the name of the person concerned.

In November 2011 I was leaving São Paulo, Brazil going to Johannesburg, South Africa. Our flight was delayed a few hours...so there was much time to chat.

I spoke to a gentleman that stated that he was a Micro-biologist studying in Brazil. He was of African origin. He stated that the institute he worked for while studying in Brazil received a grant from the US in access of 1 Billion USD..... This is what hit me!!!!!!

They developed the first strain of Ebola, but it did not give the results they wished for.

HE WAS NOW RETURNING TO AFRICA WITH A MORE POWERFULL VIRUS!
HIS MISSION WAS TO START INFECTIONS!!!!!!!!

Now, normally I have pretty good perception and can tell the chancers from the true ones.....he seemed pretty truthfull in his statements. I have his telephone and email address here in Brazil.

It only dawned on me now that he acheived what his mission was....US backed off course in cahoots with the Brazilian Government....as the university he studies at and works is state owned.

How low can Humanity go.....this is the question. I come forward with this information risking my life....but if we all don´t stand up and face the truth.....for me, life would not be worth living....Peace to all!!!

Incidentally......he was going to Congo!!!!

Kampala – Two more people have died of the hemorrhagic fever, Ebola following its outbreak in Kibaale district, 200 Km west of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. The two are said to have died last evening, bringing the total number of deaths to 16. Uganda Radio Network quotes the Kibaale district health officer Dr Dan Kyamanywa who identified the deceased as 5-year old Nicholas Asingwire and Frediano Nsabimaana, whose age couldn’t be immediately established. Dr Kyamanywa said the duo died on Monday at their homes and were interred by Ebola burial experts.

URN further reports that Dr Kyamanywa says although the community members put the death toll at 20, his records indicate 16. Meanwhile the number of patients admitted at Kagadi hospital has grown to 19 from seven last evening. Dr Kyamanywa says that the patients have been collected from the sub counties of Nyamarunda, Burora, Bwamiramira, Kyaterekera, Muhorro and Kagadi town council. The patients are now admitted at Kagadi hospital’s Ebola isolation ward.

The health officer attributes the growing number of patients to the continued vigilance by residents who are now readily identifying cases and reporting them to the health personnel. He adds that surveillance teams are already combing through the district to ensure that no infected person is left untreated. Meanwhile, Uganda’s daily New Vision reports that 19 new Ebola cases were this morning reported at Kagadi Hospital in Kibaale district. Mubende district bordering Kibaale has set up an isolation centre center following reports that Ebola patients from Kibaale were flocking the health unit for treatment.

This caused panic as Nurses turned away patients for fear that they could be having the deadly Ebola virus. Mubende Hospital boss is Dr. Edward Nkurunziza is quoted by New Vision saying that the isolation centre would handle Ebola cases if confirmed. Ebola taskforce teams are being set up in neighbouring districts. In yesterday’s address to the nation, President Yoweri Museveni said that at least seven doctors at Mulago Hospital who treated an Ebola patient from Kibaale district have been placed under quarantine.

He also said 13 health workers had been quarantined, after they handled a patient who died a few days ago. Ebola is a highly infectious disease, which presents with high grade fever and bleeding tendencies. It is very infectious, kills in a short time but can easily be prevented. The signs and symptoms of the disease include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, measles-like rash, red eyes, and sometimes with bleeding from body openings.

It can be spread through direct physical contact with body fluids like saliva, blood, stool, vomit, urine and sweat from an infected person and soiled linen used by a patient. It can also be spread through using skin piercing instruments that have been used by an infected person. Uganda has seen three major outbreaks over the past 12 years. The deadliest was in 2000 when 425 people were infected. More than half of them died. There is no vaccine for the virus. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, headache, vomiting and kidneys problems.

This is not good news but nevertheless confirms what we out here in the cheap seats suspect -- that the outbreak is far from over, that the death count is still on the rise, and that everything the government says should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's been officially confirmed in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but the strain is allegedly different in each country. Uganda has the Ebola Sudan strain and the DRC has the Bundibugyo strain. However, the fatality rate (plus or minus 60%) appears to be the same in both outbreaks.

Isiro: the crisis committee epidemics moves against Ebola

Isiro met this Saturday, August 18, the Crisis Committee epidemics Isiro District in Eastern Province has taken measures to restrict the spread of Ebola hemorrhagic fever. The population should not shake hands or be in contact with someone with this disease.

So far, Ebola has killed six people. These latest figures revealed by the Chief Medical Officer of Health District interim, Dr. Jacques Gumbaluka, revise down those Friday who reported seven deaths.

Declared epidemic in DRC Friday, August 17, the Ebola haemorrhagic fever has killed six of the ten suspects registered. For now, few patients are in isolation and other supervision, as stated by the Chief Medical Officer of Health District ad interim:

"Currently, we have two patients in isolation, etquarante-four contacts under surveillance. Of these suspects, there are eleven health professionals and thirty-three family members of suspected cases. "

EBOLA FEVER - DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO (03): (ORIENTALE) BUNDIBUGYO VIRUS CONFIRMED
[Laboratory investigations conducted at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, Uganda, have established the causative agent to be the ebolavirus species Bundibugyo virus (BDBV). Consequently the outbreaks presently occurring in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are likely to be independent events. The Ugandan outbreak is caused by the ebolavirus species Sudan virus and the DRC outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus (originally identified in an earlier outbreak occurring in Uganda). Further information is awaited.
