Or would you just use it over a fire? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6383062 You can use them over a fire. The reason you use a pressure cooker is because it is hermetically sealed. Spot on. Plus its very efficient due to the seals. Time is too long. Space is too big. |

CROW (OP) User ID: 10627924 Australia 08/01/2012 03:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was going to say the most important piece of equipment was a Distillation Apparatus. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15740069 Because not only can you purify your Water but you can make Fuel. And medicines if you have the skill. Agreed, but thats a little trickier to make/ operate. In a long term scenario, definetly have one or atleast the material and knowhow to make one. A pressure cooker and some tubing is easy to just grab and chuck in the car, or even chuck it in a backpack. Its so important, the weight would be worth it. CROW Time is too long. Space is too big. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 15740069 United States 08/01/2012 03:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A pressure cooker with some copper tubing is at a rudimentary level an Alembic. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15740069 It does distillation. Cool. Ever tried it?. What purity of alcohol can one achieve? You can get 99% pure if you give it another pass through the distiller. But depending on how you build it you can get fuel grade with one distill. It comes down to how effective your apparatus is. |

CROW (OP) User ID: 10627924 Australia 08/01/2012 03:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dont forget..chemicals that have a lower boiling temp than water will still be distilled and end up being in your so called clean water Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18946937 Excellent point. Its true, but you have to start somewhere. Choosing your source of water is very important. So is a simple pre filter, maybe through some carbon (from the fire) The bottom line is that without water, youre going to die. CROW Time is too long. Space is too big. |

Train it well before-hand, with the right know-how, and you ought to be able to adapt to any situation OK, sure, but I dont consider my brain part of my "equipment". I always have it on me. Its me. Im talking about pieces of equipment that can help your brain and your hands overcome problems, like lack of water :) Time is too long. Space is too big. |

Lester User ID: 1080430 United States 08/01/2012 04:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Would choose a quality drip filter like the Katadyn expedition candle-filter instead. Great to be able to distill water but takes a lot of energy or time to do. A candle filter has a 2.5gal reservoir, you put raw water up top and 24hrs later it is all filtered. Easy to clean the candles when pores are clogged, just scrub lightly with a Scotch-Brite pad. We've been using one in our home for almost 10yrs. Clean it about every 8mos, the candles are like new and will last forever if they don't freeze while in use. Backpacker's filter like the MSR will mate its output to a Nalgene bottle or Camelback or Dromedary bag. No worries of contamination pouring water to bag or container. Pretty handy to pump direct into your backpack bladder hydration pack. We use vodka to make herbal tinctures, Everclear is also a good medium for tinctures and medicinals. Hopefully you are set and have your self-sufficiency must haves sorted out. Probably the most effective piece of gear to help you avoid trouble rather than have to fight it is a Good Quality binocular or spotting scope. Fujinon M22 binoculars are often found for about $150. Very comparable to Zeiss or Leitz optics, but a bit heavier for extended observation 8x50mm lenses are great even in low light. A decent 60mm spotting scope like a Kowa, Fujinon, Bushnell Spacemaster or Nikon/Pentax etc will be worth a great deal. Small binos or a monocular for your shirt pocket is also worth the money. Also looks like a basic handloading setup with a few Lee bullet molds should be on your list if you are a serious gun-owner. |
