I agree with you though, as long as its not airborne, it would probably be stopped before going too far. You can grow ideas, in the garden of your MIND. |

BetweenTheFrames User ID: 724728 Canada 08/01/2012 11:27 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is one fugly virus. WHO should immediately quarantine effected areas and stop airplane flights into or out of potential hot spots. Even if this virus went airborne and got to major cities, about 15% of humans are naturally immune. So in the worst case scenario, about 1 billion people would still survive. More about ebola immunity and how it is spread in the link below. They suggest bat saliva on fruit to be a major transmission vector with eating bush meat a lesser route: [link to en.ird.fr] Coincidentally, the movie Contagion had bats as the cause of the spread of the fictional disease. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20968463 No, not blood loss, but close: they usually die of shock and organ failure due to hypotension (low blood pressure)... There IS a difference. It's strange, but not all victims show blood externally. However, the ones that do usually die, sadly. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10658177 Depends which city it would get to...if it got to new york probably would be game over. It's spread by very close contact...only people that get intimate with wildlife are likely to get the disease... Notice the key word, IF. That's the scary thing about viruses...they DO have the capacity to mutate into something never seen before (think "Outbreak")...and you never know. Airborne Ebola would be the end of mankind... Well, the nifty thing about the ebola virus is that it has a nonsegmented genome. That means it is very stable, and resistant to mutations (but not impossible). Compare this to a virus with a segmented genome (like influenza) and you'll see that a jump to airborne transmission isn't extremely likely. Not only will it have to mutate a portion of an unsegmented genetic code, but it'll need to be JUST THE RIGHT SURFACE PROTEIN for airborne transmission. It's an extremely specific mutation that needs to happen. Think about it: the last new variation of this disease was discovered in 2007, and before that, we haven't seen a new strain since 1994 (the Ivory-Coast strain). |

Also, all this sensationalism toting how much people bleed and such is probably what kept them from recognizing the first few cases in the first place. Bleeding from mucous membranes and puncture sites is reported in only 40-50% of cases ( [link to emedicine.medscape.com] and bleeding more than that is even more rare. Doesn't make this disease any less scary, but it isn't at all what people read in "The Hot Zone" or in movies like "Outbreak". |
