The calendar serves to indicate relative time frame. If something dramatic and earth shattering doesn't happen on that exact day, in that exact hour, it doesn't mean that like-effects will not happen in the following weeks, months, or years.
Even if something earth-ending didn't happen til 2020, what memories that may be left remaining will likely include the 2012 predictions in the encapsulated story.
