Earthquake watch begins after August 4th -- but will a megaquake hit?
Many threads here on GLP are predicting a megaquake (or some other big event) on August 4. My research indicates that historically asteroids making close approaches to Earth are sometimes connected to quake activity.

We tend to see more quake activity on days and time frames when we have a higher number of space rocks coming within .5 AU of the planet. My most accurate quake forecasts have been when I find asteroids that have a consistent history of quakes within a day of their past close approach dates.

So maybe a "swarm" of asteroids increases the odds that one of them has a history of quake activity which is the driving influence behind quakes happening often when there are many objects coming close.

On August 5th we begin one of these "swarm" periods which lasts through August 9th. During this 5 day window we may see a number of 6.3+ quakes or maybe the illusive 7.0+ which we have not seen since April.

Most significant dates are August 7th and 8th.

See chart below for NEO (near earth object) daily counts and averages. Then see the graph which shows the 5 day average peaking during this period.

5 Day average "peak periods" per graph:

July 5-6-7
July 21-22-23
Aug 5-6-7-8-9

July 6.3+ Quakes per [link to neic.usgs.gov]

07 03 -- 6.3
07 06 -- 6.3
07 25 -- 6.4
07 25 -- 6.4
07 26 -- 6.7
07 28 -- 6.5

I'm not saying all earthquakes are influenced by asteroids, just like all quakes are not influenced by solar activity, planetary alignments or missing pets. Just an indicator and seems to be a connection for some reason.

I do not think we'll see a megaquake soon, just a step up in quake activity.

2012 OO was first observed on July 16, 2012.
It's an asteroid 210-480 meters in size.
It makes it's next close approach August 7th.
Orbit and close approach table: [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov]

2012 OO quake history on last 4 approaches:

1970-Jul-30 -- 0.1704 AU
1970-Jul-31 -- 8.0 magnitude -- Columbia [link to en.wikipedia.org]

1981-Sep-13 -- 0.0562 AU
1981-Sep-13 -- No event
(NOTE: There were three 7.6+ quakes in 1981 on May 25, Sept 1 and Dec 19)

1992-Oct-18 -- 0.4155 AU
1992-Oct-18 -- 7.4 magnitude -- Columbia [link to earthquakes.findthedata.org]

2001-Jul-08 -- 0.4778 AU
2001-Jul-07 -- 7.6 magnitude -- Peru [link to en.wikipedia.org]

2012-Aug-07 -- 0.1102 AU

To me this would point to a 7.0+ quake within a day of August 7, 2012.
Note: Related past quakes were in South America.

I would agree. Interesting though as I just looked it up and found this:

noun
a very powerful earthquake, which measures more than 7 on the Richter scale
---
Mega-quakes of magnitude 9 or greater occur less frequently in the northern segment and can rupture the entire fault, even as magnitude-8 earthquakes strike more often in the southern segment.

I did read those sometime ago, not sure how they can class a 7 as a megathrust quake? their information is wrong.
Megathrust quakes happen on subduction zones 'mainly', and then they only happen on zones that have been known to produce an 8>.
A 7 is nowhere near classed a megaquake.

At magnitude 9, the quake was propelled into another class of monster - a megaquake. The scale used to measure earthquake magnitude, whilst useful, does not do justice to the energy involved in the biggest of the big.

The moment magnitude scale is logarithmic - meaning the energy released by a magnitude 9 is around 32 times greater than a magnitude 8, and almost 1,000 times larger than a magnitude 7.

You can call it a fail on a possible 7.0 but I expected a pick up in earthquakes and we did see that. Not big ones but swarms. My theory is higher number of NEOs increase quake activity.

In a follow up post I said I would expect to see a 7.0+ due to one NEO that had a consistent history which failed.

There are plenty of threads on GLP about the California quake swarm during this time frame, links posted above.

It is a fact that in the past we have had a higher number of earthquakes when we have a higher daily NEO count as reported here Thread: AMAZING new discovery... earthquakes influenced by asteroids!

Last year we were getting high daily counts of 8, 9, 10 and more. In past few months a high count is only 5 or 6, so I use averages. We are in a period of low NEO daily counts, and also low number of big earthquakes.

Next high count date is August 18th currently with 6.
