Why don't we revive it? Nothing will happen, it's perfectly safe!" Last Edited by MartianPrimate on 08/04/2012 12:58 AM Occam's Razor, morans! |

You shouldn't have cut off the article at that point. Make sure you read the rest of it. All of it. There doing it to put in sensors for vesvius that yes if it went up could kill millions. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21236473 And the OP quoted from a blog too!! How's that for original reporting? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21236473 And the OP quoted from a blog too!! How's that for original reporting? Had to add that the blog post didn't even have all of the article either from Reuters. The part they cut off was "De Natale says there will be no risk of an escape of magma because the molten chamber is at 7-km depth or lower and sensors will give ample warning of temperatures that reach 1,000 degrees C at the molten core. "We will stop everything if we detect temperatures at 500 degrees...we can close the top of the drilling hole hermetically in a fraction of a second," he said. Local people are divided on whether the drilling could be dangerous. "There is a risk that the drilling can lead to a shift of the earth's surface and if that happened, rather than helping to predict future problems, they will be creating them," Pozzuoli student Marco Laporta said. Many are more sanguine. "Back in the 1980s they said we would all be blown up and we weren't," pensioner Luigi Bruni said." |

The ground there has been moving for a long time and they're wanting to drill into an active volcanic cauldron with the intent to measure seismic activity, with local scientists believing this could potentially trigger an explosion. Is the idea ludicrous? Those in charge of drilling believe so. I don't think it impossible that the integrity of the caldera could be potentially compromised. It could start with a small tremor and set off a horrible chain of events. Did you know that the Campi Flegrei caldera is considered one of the most dangerous in the world? It's also much, much bigger than Vesuvius. Occam's Razor, morans! |
