Does the phase of the moon affect behavior?
I ask this because my online research has proved fruitless, with most studies only looking for statistical anomalies on the day of the full moon only (hospital admissions, police reports etc )
I know someone who is very affected by the phases of the moon, with the first indications appearing about 5 days before the full moon, and lasting until a few days after. This also happens around the new moon, but generally to a slightly lesser extent.
The personality changes are:
-sudden onset of fits of rage, screaming, shouting , verbal abuse, throwing objects, crying, hyper-sensitivity to anything and everything. She becomes very histrionic and calls up events – real or imagined – from years ago.
-physiologically there are also changes, her face goes pale, the eyes narrow and change shape (very slight, but noticeable – to me anyhow). This is not related to the menstrual cycle (directly anyhow), as that does not occur at the same time, has been a bit erratic and has its own unique challenges.
I have noticed this cyclic behaviour over about 15 years, but only put this down to the moon phases about 10 years ago. It has been predictable as to when it will start (I have “forcast” the blow-ups up to a year in advance and have been consisitently correct. And no, I do not forment them by instigating a blowup to prove my theory.
The periods between full and new moon are generally happy, rational times (except for the variable pms…) and she generally does not know why she felt so desperate and angry previously
I will answer questions and add more comments later, just wanted to see if this resonates with anybody.

thanks

The research says no. That said, the research also says that eating sugary snacks doesn't wind up your kids. Sometimes I think the researchers get it wildly, spectacularly wrong.

Anyway, I used to work in a mental hospital as a "mental health assistant (MHA)." All nurses and MHAs knew that any schizophrenics or bipolar guys in the manic half of their cycles were going to give us hell on the night of a full moon. Their symptoms would be cranked up to eleven.

None of the folks with other mental illnesses seemed to be affected.

I will add that some claim "normal" people are also affected by the phases of the moon, but it seems harder to prove. If you ever work on a psych ward, it will be very, very obvious.

Re: Does the phase of the moon affect behavior?
I'll ALSO add that it makes no sense for this to be the case. We get full moons throughout the year, with the moon at widely varying distances. Whatever is doing this, gravity 'ain't it.

A moon is "full" because it's reflecting a maximum amount of sunlight back to the earth. Why would that affect anything? I have no idea and, again, it makes no sense, but there's no doubt in my mind that something is going on there.

Funny you should ask.

It was a family joke - my dad was incredibly affected by the moon - the full moon.

He was odd at the best of times, but come full moon, we would know it was because of his behaviour.

There really is something to this, if you have people in your life who cycle, track it againstr the moon over a period of months, you may find a strong correlation.

EMTs I've associated with tell me all the loonies freak out during the full moon.

At one point I was convinced my wolf-like dog's behavior was linked to lunar cycles, but it wasn't consistent enough to discard the possibility of random patterns.

Clearly there are animals affected by lunar cycles, for example corals that spawn during the full moon. The extra light surely has an effect on nocturnal hunters and prey.

Re: Does the phase of the moon affect behavior?
Some say i'ts very existence affects behavior (in a bad way) becoming more intense when it is full.

They also say we humans would be better off if it were removed.

Just what I have read.

I'll see if I can find a link. Been awhile. Google has changed since then.

The moon pulls the tides, we are from the sea...maybe still part of us. Pineal gland maybe?

Re: Does the phase of the moon affect behavior?
I have lived with a sensitivity to the moon phases all of my life – figured it out about twenty years ago and have researched it ever since. You cannot convince anyone who is NOT sensitive that it is possible. The gravity debate is hard for people because “the moon is so far away,” etc. etc.

Yes, the pineal gland is right on the money. "Blinded by Starlight" by Frank McGillion discusses the issue in his book.

Also interesting is the electromagnetic side of it. Einstein said electric energy is the fundamental origin of our entire physical world. The neurons in our human bodies have a primary source that is electrical. Even our bones have electrical properties.

However, I am stopping here because there’s no way I am taking on the debate, which is a waste of time for me.

I just want to confirm that your friend is not alone and is not crazy. As I said, if someone doesn’t believe in it, there is no way to convince them. You have to make your peace with that, which is not so big of a deal.

More to the point, what to do about it?

First of all, you accept it, like any other condition or situation. So, you say, I have this challenge around the time of the full moon. The best part is that you know about it. So, you plan your life – when you can – to have fewer important activities and decisions like family, business, finance, whatever. Use the time from New Moon to First Quarter plus a few days to get important things done.

Experiment with sleeping with the head in different directions. I can only sleep when my head is pointing North and in line with the electromagnetic field.

Find simple, easy, non-habit forming, non-toxic relaxing herbs to use during the stressful time like Passionflower and Chamomile. Contact an herbalist, do some research. There are highly effective homeopathic pellets that are not habit forming and mild. Adaptogen herbs like Ashwaganda is another thing to ask about.

I also recommend talking to an herbalist or naturopath about hormonal issues that can be easily adjusted.

Acupuncture works well for me also. Balances out the ch'i over time so there are fewer ups and downs.

Use music, bubble baths, long walks, sex – whatever works for relaxation.

Blocking the windows for the moonlight is another method for better sleep and less reaction.

There’s other research about melatonin, but I don’t have the details to share here right now.

It is possible to live a wonderful life with this sensitivity. I am amazed that so few people have it, and as a result have so little connection to the universe we live in. Our society demands that we believe that it is perfectly normal to be plugged into an ipod, cell phone and tv for 18 hours a day, but we must be crazy if we are sensitive to the natural cycle of the moon.

Who are the crazy ones?

Thanks for this honest and intelligent reply, I do appreciate it. I think you are correct, acceptance that it is a reality is vital. I will try to get my hands on the McGillion book and try to introduce some of your suggestions. It is very difficult to suggest that there is a pattern ,but the herbs etc are easy to introduce. I am glad that you are at ease with the cycle and recognise it as such. All the best to you.

The SUN and the Moon control human behavior. The Sun is Electric and the Moon is Magnetic.

Can I ask another question? Do you also find yourself hyper-sensitive to white or refined flour and wheat products?

Yes, pretty funny. My sister calls me Miss Sensitive. I can eat wheat once in a while, but mostly stay towards less gluten, less dairy, and keep to organic meat especially, and vegetables. Commercial white sugar turns me into a rage. Organic sugar does not have the same harshness to it. We won't even talk about HFCS.

Yes.

I have many family members that work in ER or who are EMT's and they will tell you that the busiest time of the month is when there is a full moon.
