My HS had an indoor pool and I was on the swim team for 2 years. The subdivision I grew up in had an Olympic size pool that I swam for. I also played baseball and golf.
Making a statement that Phelps would suck at all other sports is idiotic.

Swimming is very hard that's why not many succeed. Yet it is beautiful sports. They say that just by swimming a man can build himself a beautiful body from head to toe.

Blacks cant swim anyway. Their bodies are not good for it. Their bone density is higher.

phelps is a phenom,fish man. badass. he is the best at what he does.

listen all of those who had the opportunity to swim had the same chances to win as many medals as phelps .black white red yellow but not one could do it till now, swimming that much is fucking hard, and you gotta have the strange combination of motivation, mind , and body , a swimmers body, not everyone has one such suited for swimming that well...fuck its easy to choke and easy to give up, easy to be unlucky as well. So you are saying any great athelete who is willing to do the exact same training as him can win as many medals as him is bs, total bs.

Well that depends on what qualifies people as the greatest athelete in history.
The Greatest swimmer in histroy? Check
Holds most swimming world records? Check
Has garnered the most olympic medals than anyone else, in any other sport in one single summer olympics? Check
The only olympian in history to win a single event 3 times, spanning 3 or more different olympics? Check
Most decorated Olympian of all time? Check
(This isn't even including all of the National, International, and world championships he has won)

With his credentials, he certainly should be considered one of the greatest atheletes of all time, if not THE greatest.

If Phelps had the same training as Carl Lewis, Lewis would have beat Phelps ass in EVERY track event.

Sad thing is, swimmers get like ten chances at a medal each Olympics, when most Olympians only get one to two

each event you have to swim three competitive races... that is hard to do for 7 days straight..

shit happens and so many things can go wrong and it's very easy to have an off day or get sick, injured (true athletes know this).. there is a lot of luck involved in winning as well as more discipline and commitment then most can imagine..

the fact that the USA swim team cleaned up at the Olympics and this guy in his 4th run has the MOST medals - JUST AT THIS OLYMPICS - is enuff said..

My only con against Phelps is he could easily be successful at another Olympics in 2016.. but hes rich now and is probably gonna be a lazy bum the rest of his life..

But I also think they have it planned for him to come back when he's older.. probably skip 1 or 2 Olympics and them come back to see if he can do it.. hell NBC would probably pay him 10's of millions to come back in 2020.

But the bottom line is a real athlete would never stop until they get injured or could no longer qualify.. ask most football, baseball and basketball guys.. they are rich but want that competitiveness.. that win.. it's addicting and so satifying

Why? Because swimming, although not an obscure sport by any means, is not accessible to as many potential athletes as say, track and field. The competition pool for track athletes is much larger, so I would argue that a guy like Carl Lewis is a much greater athlete than Phelps because Lewis had a lot more competition.
