He just called me up to tell me that this strange looking thing just landed in the adjacent open fields. They went and checked out and found NASA symbol on it. He confirmed it is Curiosity. |

You do realize it's going to take hours to deploy all the actual observation instruments right? And before that happens NASA has to ensure that the environment is indeed safe for them to deploy. These are very basic cams that are solely meant for hazard detection. Trust, the payload on this thing is fucking expensive. Look forward to 720p videos of the martian surface. Nobody has patience anymore is the problem, I'm guilty too at times, thanks! |

Its descent-stage retrorockets fired, guiding it to the surface. Nylon cords lowered the rover to the ground in the "sky crane" maneuver. When the spacecraft sensed touchdown, the connecting cords were severed, and the descent stage flew out of the way. The time of day at the landing site is mid-afternoon -- about 3 p.m. local Mars time at Gale Crater. The time at JPL's mission control is about 10:31 p.m. Aug. 5 PDT (early morning EDT). I asked on another thread why they did this mission so late at night, it must have something to do with the sun and rotation of Mars to it? My guess. |
