our brains evolved enough to comprehend our own mortality and the greater environment around us, and at first we had to be able to explain things we couldn't understand, an old man in space was as good a way as any that came before it (space snakes, whatever)
its just disappointing our planet has been held back hundreds of years by ignorance, bigotry and outright murder by those too stupid to be open minded that just rely on religion.
for every one person scared of dieing and therefore wants to believe something exists afterward there are five people who think their god will punish everyone they dislike in life and that they will be rewarded while others will not.
