How big could this be? If a big eruption happens what are the dangers for Auckland ?

Don't worry this happens every few years. If it decided to go supernova and implode in on itself you might have to worry - like Taupo. Even if there was a tsunami there is far too much land (Coromandel) and islands protecting you for any massive waves. Prevailing winds would have the ash heading east.

I don't know but the last recorded significant activity was 2007 I believe.

White Island volcanic alert increased



The volcanic alert level at White Island has been increased to level 2.

Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is monitoring volcanic activity, after GNS Science raised the alert level of the island.

A web camera captured a small eruption in the early hours of Sunday morning, following an increase in volcanic tremor and gas levels over the past week.

While these phenomena are not unheard of on White Island, this is the first substantial confirmation that small scale eruptions are occurring on the island and confirms the risk to visitors has increased, according to GeoNet.

The aviation colour code has been increased to orange, indicating the volcano is exhibiting heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption.

Just listening to the radio, Tongariro is spewing volconic ash and State Highway 1 is closed.

An eruption at Mt Tongariro has forced people to leave their homes and prompted a potential threat warning to be issued for much of the central North Island.

GNS Science says the eruption occured at 11.50pm on Monday and widespread ash fall has been reported.

It appears the eruption happened at Te Mari Craters, which are close to the Ketetahi Hot Springs on the northern side of the mountain.

Civil Defence says the volcanic activity could pose a threat to the Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, Manawatu-Wanganui, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki regions.
