Azerbaijan is a Turkish ally in the Caucasus region and threatens Russian ally Armenia with war. Turkish-Armenian borders are closed from 1993. Lots of noises by the international community the last couple of years for the official recognition of the Armenian genocide by Turkey in 1918. Russia already threatened Turkey about their plans for a pipeline with Azerbaijan. Turkey/NATO were also against Russia in the 2008 war of Russia and Georgia.
