What is the best DIESEL truck engine for a pickup truck?

If you are looking to do something like this and also intend to burn "dirty" meaning used motor oil or bio stuff you'd need to look at putting in different o rings, seals and related stuff too as those inputs can degrade the standard ones. I think the 83' and younger year engines have the resistant o rings etc., my 79 does not so I have to buy diesel fuel but my son can burn oil in his, I think his engine came from a 84' or 86' TD station wagon Benz.

I have 100k on my 07 5.9 cummins, i haven't had a bit of trouble with anything. The local diesel shop told me when I bought it to run from the 6.0 ford, they said it's not un common for people to spend 8k to get them to run. I saw them jack the cab off to change injectors, witch is what the dealer does as well. I tow a 8500lb RV and I can't say enough about how strong it is, I was a commercial truck driver and cummins engines just go and go. I never saw a power stroke or a dmax in a over the road truck.

Cummins hands down . Inline 6 is simplest eng to repair and most efficient .
Run from that Ford 6 oh no .
Ford sued Navistar and discontinued after 5 yrs ,screwed a lot of Ford owners with that pos .
Cummins 5.9 has been around since the 60"s ,improved over the yrs but same motor .
Look under the hood , GM & Ford are loaded with sensors and electrical crap to fail .
Besides , Cummins is a six compared to v-8 of the others , fuel economy is way better with Cummins .

I traded mine.....maintenance was way to expensive, wont look back now.

That said I parked my 99 V10 F250

Now I drive my 95 12v Cummins as daily driver
4 speed auto with lock up torque converter.
Essentially a auto 5 speed 21-22 MPG.

Stay away from anything else. They are EMP proof
1 wire electronics. (only a fuel shut off)

They run on drain oil, paint thinner, anti-freeze, hydraulic oil vegetable oil, little moon-shine mixed in for Bio Diesel. Anything you mix in the tank it will burn it.

All the future will be run on Algae...

I like Ford's new 6.7L, it's expensive to maintain though...

But still miles better than the 6.4L...

I just bought my first diesel last summer. It is the 2000 Ford 7.3 auto tranny.

I haven't really done much except drive it like a car but the guy that had it previously hauled a 5th wheel equipment trailer full of tools without problems (so he says).

The truck has a chip in it and hand tuner, at least a 6" straight pipe exhaust and gets 17 MPH.

I guy I know has the 12 valve cummins and is getting about 14 MPG after having a bunch of work done but guys with the newer 24 valve cummins are supposed to be getting 25 MPG.

I have a Dodge 2004.5 Ram 3500 6-speed 4x4 100,000 miles and the overhead shows 26-28 mpg . Computer does not see extra fuel added by chip but hand calculated she gets 22-23 on hwy .
City kills you getting 8500 lbs moving but such is life .
Blows mpg my 4 banger Ranger got but that truck made it to 300,000 miles till I sold it .
When I bought her diesel was cheaper than reg gas .....wtf!!

Before economy crashed had a Mercedes with Bluetec diesel and that would get 38 mpg all day long .

I just bought a 2005 FORD EXCURSION 6.0 POWER STROKE TURBO. They are selling for 10k over the gas models.

GMC is the best truck. Everyone will say ford ,dodge, chevy, or gmc what every. truth is if you take care of what you got and don't just blow smoke all the time, a diesel will last a very long time(truth). Ford 6.0 is not a good truck at all, it even sounds like its a toy diesel. I don't know that much about dodge but Cummins diesels have been around a long time and they are good. with that said I don't know if they are good in a dodge. I have a GMC Duramax diesel 6.6 03 2500 124,000 miles on it and it is a great truck love it. very very strong and I have abused it some but she keeps running strong. people are afraid of computer diesels. lol Be a MAN or dont buy a diesel. computer have come a long ways people. The truth is you need them to achieve a great motor.

p.s People say all the time Ford 7.3 is the best but ask or self this if it was such a great motor why did they only make it 2 years and then make the 6.0. lol just ask your self ha ha ha theirs only one answer.

The engine was lasting too long, costing Ford new sales. Also, at the time Chevy was coming out with a new deisel, and Ford wanted to keep up.

The 6.0 was a mistake.

Catepillars can cost only 4000 euro...second handed.

how about the $2500 turbo over-hauls?

around here where I live is dairy farm country , everywhere you look the dodge 2500-3500 4x4 with the Cummings diesel seems to be the truck of choice, that said, the Ford diesel super duty trucks seem to next and the Chevy/GM duramax in third place. I dont know what brand is better than the other, it is just my observation. btw, these farmers are not easy on their trucks.

Get a 3.9 cummins. It's small. It's powerful. And you can still get good fuel mileage Whatever you do. Don't go with a ford.

Go with a 5.9 or a 3.9 cummins. My brother has a 98 dodge 2500 with the 5.9. It has nearly 400,000 miles on it.

get a dodge between 94 and 98. great mileage, best reliability(run FOREVER), cheap to add power, and just sexy as hell!!!!

Dodge cummins is the best no doubt I have a 2001 and 2000. 2500 and 3500 and the y never let me down i have well over 200,000 miles on both and they run just as good as when i bought them I did have a ford and I was getting it repaired a lot ford is abousolute garbage so if you have to pick a diesel engine go with a 5.9L cummins

Buy the new Dodge Ram 1500 Eco-Diesel ...3.5L engine turbo boost. I've got mine last your and I'm in love with it, Ram 1500 outdoorsman 4x4 3.0l diesel.. It eats only 10L/100km (23mpg) on the highway and about 14L (16mpg) in the city and I ain't driving like a granny.
shit load of torque... only 240hp but 420lb of torque.

I have the Cummins 5.9. It' great. 275,000 mi. still strong.
Pretty easy to work on if needed.

I am original owner of my 97 f-250 power stroker.
Engine still runs great at 248,000 miles.
