*Just In* U.S. Freezes All Nuclear Reactor Construction & Operating Licenses

The storage of nuclear waste at nuclear power facilities poses long-term health and environmental risks, including the risk of leaks from spent fuel pools and fires. Despite this, the NRC has refused my repeated requests to address the serious risks of long-term, on-site storage of nuclear waste in Indian Point’s relicensing proceeding.

In light of my recent federal appeals court victory and a related contention I filed last month in the relicensing proceeding, however, it appears that the NRC has finally changed course. Today, in a victory for the 17 million people living and working close to Indian Point, the NRC has committed to addressing the risks posed by long-term nuclear waste storage at the facility before making any relicensing decisions.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) acted today to put a hold on at least 19 final reactor licensing decisions – nine construction & operating licenses (COLS), eight license renewals, one operating license, and one early site permit – in response to the landmark Waste Confidence Rule decision of June 8th by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

And don't forget, Obama doesn't want any new licenses for coal fired or natural gas plants. He's bound and determined to kill this countries infrastructure one way or another.

He talks up green energy real good but what they don't say is the massive tax the EPA has waiting in the wings on solar panels and wind turbines !

Wind, solar and water energy is nothing but a scam to keep the elite in power through resources. There is a whole new kind of free energy available and it will be the death of the current elite. They will do whatever they can to try and keep it buried but they will fail.

Coal, gas, oil, nuclear, wind, solar, water and any other resource is what keeps the current elite in power. Once the new tech comes out, they will lose their power.

They've abandoned the Yucca repository -- it was never finished and is not being used.

They have no contingency.

Yeah well until Fairy Unicorn power starts actually generating any real life watts we still need to run our econmic energy engine.

We have a 100 years of very real and inexpensive energy in the ground that we know how to get to and know how to use in manners that don't belch out cubic tons of polutants like the third world is currently doing.

I'm all for an alternative power source and I do believe that we will have something far better than current tech one day, but as of right now we don't. The plan of the greentards and this current admin to just make everything we do have so expensive that we create a situation where sunflower power is actually cost effective is freakin as retarded as it dangerous to our economy.

We should use the cheap abundant energy soruces we have now while we are working on the magic power sticks...and I'm not worried about the energy elite squashing that incredible tech because when the power sticks get produced, it'll probably be the same energy elite doing it and capitolizing on it, which I have no problem with.

Frikkin windmills are 1,000 year old tech and solar power is even just as weak and old, both are too costly and just do not solve out for the massive power generation this country needs. We are throwing away the cheap energy we already own and could use while we move onto a real viable future energy source and it's one of the several things that are killing our economy.

eyup...Harry Reid killed Yuca Mountain when Obama took over...anyone who looked into that knew that was a headshot to nuclear energy.

This is way to late, should have all been shutdown two years ago. If we have any disasters, as in earthquakes, other natural/un-natural types.

We could have one hell of a mess, like on Lake Erie, and the others near water supplies. What good will this have?

Better to die because the lights go out, than to die from nuclear isotope contamination, which is a statistical inevitability with current nuclear technology.

Come what may, nuclear power must be stopped, even if half the worlds population must die....

but nothing so dire would happen, if all nuclear plants were decommissioned, because the precepts of the pro-nuclear movement are not founded on logic or truth or even on economics.

Yucca has already cost the taxpayer.. what..? I've read as little as 5 bil.. as much as 100.. somewhere in between I imagine.. for a mile long tunnel to nowhere.

The money would be better spent on technology to encapsulate the shit permanently.. it could be done..

Then it could be put in the mountain.. or a lake.. or harry ried's backyard for all I care.

The technology exists to utilize coal-fired plants.. with modern scrubbers which remove all of the toxic emissions.
I made a post about it awhile back. It is viable tech.. but the illusion and the media hype is that coal is dirty and nasty and contributes to environmental pollution and global warming.. That is BS..

You are 100% correct, IMO..

Let's shut down the outdated reactors such as the GE Mark I.. which was a flawed design from the very beginning.. do away with the reactors on fault lines.. pick up the slack with coal.. put people to work..

And search for better ways in the future to generate our power.. such as thermal from volcanic.. etc.

SAVE THE GAS AND COAl. All we were doing is shipping it to China anyway. Why give away all our resources then when we run out all the assholes that sold it just move to another country. Let China use up their own resources.

ok, I am confused. This stops any new nuke plants but does nothing to the ones already in service? Is that correct?

What affect will that have on that new reactor being built right now in Alabama for Southern Power? Will they let them finish it do ya think?

I forget the name of the plant. They already have others at the same sight already.

the sad part is we should have slowly gone green decades ago.

It is too little.. they've already renewed 21 of 23 of the old Mark I reactors for 20 more years. One is pending. The other is shut down.
