Also, both professional and amateur astronomers miss things all the time.
I like to point that out to astromut who thinks space could never hurt us, move along - nothing to see!
I am friends with guys who are serious pros, neither of them are arrogant enough to "never say never" to any scenario, but us having a binary twin would "NOT be shocking" they have told me, time and again. They would know, they TEACH the subject and are administrators at observatories.
They also talk about how unreliable our detection methods really are. NASA likes to suck it's own you know what, they miss stuff all the time and don't like to admit it.
An object, coming from well below the southern pole would not be an impossible scenario. The data and proof is all around us. Look how the governments have prepared, are almost "expecting" something that would require all the drastic laws that have been slammed down our throats - by Obummer and Bush.
Best to keep our eyes on this still.
Quoting: DrumrDude Astromut has never said that space could never hurt us. Also, the kinds of things that NASA is missing are very small asteroids, not Nibiru-sized brown dwarfs.
