Re: MORINGA- THE MIRACLE PLANT!!! THIS IS A SURVIVAL PLANT AND WILL BE VITAL IN NEAR FUTURE!!!
sorry if this has been posted but I didn't read thru the whole thread. Yes moringa (our local name is malunggay) is a highly beneficial tree to grow. You cn plant cuttings from a mother tree (make sure they re at least 1 cm in diameter) and this will grow very easily. On an added note, we have a superstition that says do not be facing the sun when you plant it. the sun must always be behind you. I don't know the story behind it but it wouldn't hurt to follow it. Thanks for this thread OP, I will read thru it little by little.

Hi my friend, thank you for your post. Here in Portugal there are no Philipine food stores, so there are no moringa here... i have to buy my moringa capsules from India or Thailand. I will start to grow my moringas when the winter stops.

I am growing it for a while here at the Canary Islands, if the climate is right it grows exposively. But too much water or bad drain is fatal. I use the tea of the leaves for making a plant-spray for my mangos, they are reacting very positive! Furthermore good cattle food and of course as a vegetarian it supports my protein and amino acids. I am no "hippy" but I truly believe this plant could help humanity!

Hey Luis, thanks for the post! My mom sent me moringa a month ago with other herbs, and though she told me it was good, I didn't have idea about HOW good it really is! I'm gonna drink it from now on them (gonna make some tea). Awesome! :)

Oh YUMMY! we don't have any Portuguese restaurants here but some spanish restaurants serve it but always with red sauce. The only time I tried it portuguese style was in european food expo here and I fell in love with it in white sauce! Sorry off topic but the memory of the taste makes me excited :)

I add Moringa to many dishes. The other day i added it chicken curry. I turn off the flame, mix the leaves in and cover for 30 seconds then serve. When cooked just right, it has a very nice texture like fresh seaweed. It might also be good with bacalhau! I'm so excited for you to grow your own!

do you eat the leaves?
 Quoting: Luisport

I don´t like the taste of fresh leaves, kinda bitter. I dry them and grind it to powder. This powder I add to my pasta-sauce and has no additional taste. The water purifying I nevert tried, already got mineral water from the mountains, can´t be any purer. Till now I keep the seeds for new seedlings but in general I cut them at 20cm above the ground every two months. (this stimulates new leaf production). Although they say they can bare -7 degrees my experience is that they don´t like cold or too much water.

yes that's true, the main danger is too cold and too wet. I love fresh leaves in sandwishes, they are allmost gurmet food, but you can cook them as soup, moringa rice or cuscus, like spinach!

Moringa: easy to grow indoors, and quite fast yes (it grows average 10 cm per month, but if its hot and dry it can grow faster!)

but the tree is sensitive to cold and wet. It will readily drop its leaves to any change in conditions.

Mine drops leaves easily.

I think you can grow it easily in Portugal, but with some care. It will grow well in summer (hot and dry), but during winter it will dislike the cold and wet. Plant it facing south and in a slope, so that winter rains drain easily.

I dont personally like to eat it raw. It tastes like mustard. But when my moringa gets its leaves back again, I will try to cook or dry it.

Def it should be more cultivated. It provides nutrition and protein, but you can't probably live solely on it. Because you would miss calories. But I would replace normal city trees with more moringas :)

There are a lot more of other "miracle" plants. Each with its "miracle" (though I dont like this word). Some edible trees are a miracle themselves because once established they can provide you food, with no effort and resistant to the weather.

Thank's! You just give me hope... if you have it in Iceland, i hope i can have it here! I know people in Mozambique that live only on moringa... but i think we should have a variable source of food. But moringa is special because it can have a real huge positive impact in the bigest problems of our planet!

I'm so glad for your thread! It gives me the idea to propagate cuttings to share with others. I WISH i can visit your wonderful country and experience your culture and cuisine one day! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could easily share these things in a snap? I'll ask around if/how moringa can be grown indoors so you can have it year round! Many thanks and sweet dreams!
