It's a serious problem basically in stagnant water [freshwater lakes, rivers, etc.] the south. Almost unheard of in the north.

I guess something this scary would be more likely to be reported on but I've never read one where the guy died hours after experiencing symptoms...yikes.

I worked at a state park in Virginia last year and the chief park ranger told me that people were contracting MRSA from the Shenandoah riverbanks. I later read that the Shenandoah is the second most polluted river in the nation.

I don't know what the first most polluted river is.

I think the reporter probably got a little carried away with the "rushed to the hospital" part. He was likely sick for a day or two before he got weak and then they took him to the hospital. To have necrotizing fasciitis in an arm and a leg, he was likely either injecting drugs or was a diabetic, or both. Wonder if he was getting tattoos?

I think it is a "toss up" between the Ohio river and the mississippi river
