What I recently learned: When single mothers who are on welfare and foodstamps marry, they retain their benefits. The husband's salary is a non issue and the free medical care continues as well. The reasoning is that the children are not the responsibility of the new husband. The world as truly turned upside down.

It doesn't make much sense from an economic standpoint. For every dollar currently spent on welfare, it generates about $1.50 in economic activity in the US. Welfare dollars are nearly all spent domestically and locally. I'm not saying we should make welfare bigger, because there are bound to be diminishing returns, but currently, Welfare is one of the few ways our government spends money that is actually decent stimulus on the economy. It certainly works better than tax breaks and corporate welfare for companies that ship jobs and money overseas. And it is a HELL of a lot better than all the money we are wasting fighting pointless wars in places where we have no business being. Especially since we won't EVER get anything out of doing it.

Do we have more oil for fighting wars in the middle east? No. Did we get anything out of fighting wars in Africa or Asia in the last 50 years either? Nothing. Spend that money at home and quit sending our brave young men to die in some shithole that has nothing to do with us for people who hate us. Once we pull out of those countries, we just leave governments, regimes, and terrorist organizations who want nothing more than to make our lives more difficult. We either need to stop bothering, or go all the fuck out and carpet bomb the countries until they surrender and become a territory under our control.

"This makes no sense from a humanitarian point of view or from an economic one."

If conservatives and "moderates" of both parties get their way in the 2012 Farm Bill now winding its way through Congress, America's recession is about to get a whole lot worse for poor people. In the hallowed name of deficit reduction, the House Agriculture Committee is proposing cuts of up to $16 billion from federal food stamps (a Senate version would cut $4.5 billion) - even as they protect billions in crop insurance for large-scale farmers and insurance corporations.

What will this radical excising mean, both for America's poor and the economy at large?

The answer is both simple and multilayered. The costs of these cuts will be immediate and long-term, felt palpably in people's stomachs and throughout the "lower tiers" of the economy - the rungs of poverty and hunger inhabited by at least 48 million Americans (not counting millions more who qualify for food stamps but have not accessed them).

Start with this: the proposed cuts to food stamps (known as SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) would eliminate food aid for 2 to 3 million low-income people, "mostly low-income working families with children and seniors," according to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP). These cuts will "literally take food away from hungry people," warned Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., after the House Agriculture Committee earlier this month rebuffed his attempt to prevent them.

1. You sound like a typical, dumb democrat, who decides everything based on your "feelings" rather than common sense and logic.

2. Virtually NO ONE in the country is "going hungry", with the possible exception of the homeless, who often CAUSED their own homelessness, through drug abuse, crime, or an unwillingness to work.

3. So called poor people in the USA own televisions, cars, cell phones, Xboxes, they have air conditioning, they get FREE medical care at the County Hospital, and basically get all the "necessities" of life for free, that I have to WORK for 8 hrs. a day at a job I HATE, so I can SUPPORT MYSELF. Oh, and have you seen the obesity in poor neighborhoods ? It's from wolfing down burgers, fries and chips while watching their flat-screen TV.

4. Even if they were going hungry there is NO federal money available, as the idiots running the government continue to spend 3 dollars for every 2 they take in, and BORROW the rest, creating a MOUNTAIN of debt for my grandchildren.

5. CHARITIES help the truly needy ( yes, I GIVE ), and it is NOT the role of government to be anyone's parents or nanny.

6. The BEST thing Obama could do for poor people is to tell them the spigot is being turned off, they need to support themselves, and take ANY job they can get, whether it's in fast food, or cleaning toilets in a motel.

7. The government can and SHOULD encourage people to get off the welfare checks by offering paying JOBS, where NEEDED work is to be done, and the wages equal the welfare check they now get for free.

8. If they are young enough, and healthy enough, and refuse to work, they get ZERO from the government.

9. If this "causes" a crime wave, because immoral people do commit crimes ( moral people don't commit crimes no matter how poor they are ), then let's divert some tax money for bullets for the police, to just shoot criminals like armed robbers, and looters.

Nothing 'third world' about it! -- that is an infinitely more nutritious diet than what most Americans eat.

Add a little olive oil and a few seasonings. Look into buying your staples in 50 lb sacks. You've got a plan for some of the healthiest eating anyone can accomplish.

I would suggest at least adding a multivitamin and calcium+ minerals supplement daily.

My husband and I could afford to eat whatever we might want, but our daily staple is... beans and rice!

Great advice for when he can't afford any more than those basic provisions. If he can afford to buy that stuff to add to his meals, then he can afford more than a third world diet. You didn't think that one through, did you?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9664906

Absolutely thought it through.

And practice it in real life.

Buy olive oil by the gallon. Yes it is a major outlay.

This is about thrifty eating, not about payday to payday making ends meet. You do have to have a few hundred dollars on hand to stock up. And you have to have space and good quality containers to store it.

This is about planned, long-term thrift.

Buy rice from the Asian market, pinto beans from the supermercado in 50 lb sacks.

Vitamins and supplements in the large size generic version (read the labels and compare).

Beans and rice alone do provide protein, but the olive oil and supplements make it a completely healthy, wholesome diet.

If you need to ditch anything from that shopping list, drop the seasonings -- they are optional.

Saving up so they can buy in large quantities to support themselves long term does not help people who need food now. This is one of the reasons the poor stay poor. They cannot afford to make investments and purchases that will save them money over the long term. They have to do things like go to the laundromat where they spend far more than they would on a washer and dryer, or buy the old, half broken down car instead of a new efficient one that would save them money on repairs and fuel.

Thrifty eating is all well and good, but it doesn't help someone who is stuck in payday to payday, making ends meet cycles.

Plus, there is another reason why poor people sometimes have to buy crappy convenience meals instead of real food. Think about this, you drive to work, takes you a few minutes. That same trip on a city bus with transfers takes half an hour or more. These people's work days are considerably longer than yours because of this. But wait, there is more. Since they cannot afford the conveniences in their own homes such as laundry, they have to spend more of their time on things like that too. Everything they do costs them more time, so when it comes to personal care, they have to cut back where they can. Cooking? Sure, you can spend an hour making a meal, or you can nuke a banquet meal you bought for 88 cents in 5 minutes. It is going to make you fat, it is unhealthy, but hey, it is cheap and fast.

This is the predictable first impulse of all those in power. Start cutting at the bottom, and make those who are already suffering suffer more. Above all else, do not ask those who are incomprehensibly rich to sacrifice a thing.

These "freeloaders" cannot get their food stamp benefits (and no, it isn't much at all) without being at the poverty level. A single person has to make about $10,000 a year to qualify for food stamps. What kind of seflish Any Rand lovers would bitch at someone making that kind of money receiving a small supplement for food?

The Grace Commission found, way back in the 1980s, that we could eliminate 1/3 of all government expenses without a cutting a single job or a single program, because at least that much of taxpayer money is 100% waste. Predictably, the great "anti-Gubmint" Ronald Reagan ignored the Grace Commission's suggestions, as has everyone else since. What we have instead is a monstrous thing that forces us to pay for a nanny state, but delivers no worthy services to the people in return.

All economic problems today revolve around the simple fact that 80% of workers are not paid enough to meet the ever increasing costs of living. We need another Huey Long.

I feel bad for the OLD and poor children that will be effected with this... but ive seen people buy steaks, shrimp, name brand foods all on EBT cards...

we currently have in this country:

15,000,000 receiving welfare 131.9 billion dollars a year.

8,750,000 receiving Disability payments more then population of 30 states dont even know what that comes out to.

And we are not in a recession?

If we had bread lines instead of EBT (USA flag) like the 1920's we would see people lined up for miles to collect food!!!!!!

But yes the working ones seem to get F-ed in the end!

Shrimp isnt that expensive,,at walmart. I see people at publics spending $,with cards, I'm like, how do they do it,??

People have their own way of shopping. Some just dont know how to shop. I personaly would look for good deals, and stock up.

Id keep the food stamp thing going we're not that broke.

This may be a way to bring change to the food stamp dept, If we get hit by a disaster,and/or they find this wouldnt work out so well the government will have to step in and create a new program.

Decent countries ensure all their people have food and health care. Shitty countries don't. Are we a decent country, or a shitty one? Everyone should have enough to eat in this country, yes, even lazy people, criminals, addicts, etc. EVERYONE.

uhh, no. Are you saying the U.S has always been a "shitty" country?

Those things have never been a "right" here.

Perfect example of libtards hating America.
 Quoting: Charlie Scene

Yes, but we have the chance to change for the better. I don't hate America, I hate middle America. The coasts are the real America, not the shitty flyover states (Colorado excepted).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18629109

Well, you do understand that those "shitty" flyover states in middle America is where your food comes from right. Maybe they should all just form their own union and tell people like you to kiss their asses. Then again, the food stamp program directly benefits the mega "farms" and "ranches" by guaranteeing more sales. That in turn is bringing huge returns through lobbyists to the politician types and ceos behind the programs. Just another way to swindle the people of this once great land.

But you will pay 25% in taxes while Mitt Romney thinks it is fair for him to pay 14%, I can not wrap my head around that one.

Re: Congress Set To Take Food Aid Away From Millions Of Hungry Americans!
