Why do Australians never say "mates"? It should be "blokes" or "fellows".

There is though one situation where you could say mates, as in 'I'm going to see my mates', but noone addresses people as "mates" in a first person sense. You're right, you'd say blokes, fellas, guys etc..but not mates.

Actually we're mostly descendent from the europeans after WWII tore their countries to bits... lucky our pm at the time only picked the cream of the crop ;)
