Why do all other ethnicities sport their hair naturally except black women. What do they have to hide? Aren't they proud of their hair? If only they knew what they could do with their hair, coarse, kinky hair is much more versatile to work with. It's a shame, they refuse to acknowledge it. |

Quoting: Harry 20242703 Do you think this would be a good investment? I don't think they are the traditional wigs so to speak, they are usually a weave... they braid the hair to the head and sew in extentions... ...white women do them too! |

Especially the older ladies. I accidentally walked into a wig/extension shop for black women last year and it was weird. Also, we had a black maid growing up and sometimes we would stay at her house when our parents would go out of town. I was really shocked one day when I snuck into her bedroom and saw several wigs perched on top of her dresser. Later she told me she always wore a wig and she showed me her real hair which was very sparse with bald spots. Freaked me out. Sweet lady though. I still remember her big hugs, her hot dog smell. She made the best hot dog and mayo sandwiches. |

Quoting: Harry 20242703 Do you think this would be a good investment? over the past 5 years or so there has been a HUGE "natural hair" phenom sweeping the African American community... sites like "Long Hair Care Forum" and "Black Girl Long Hair". You would find a very profitable outlet because there are many Black/Hebrew women willing and wanted to use WIGS as a PROTECTIVE STYLE and keep them growing their natural hair out to extreme lengths. So stock up on some Half Wigs and Lacefront Wigs and go to a site called "Black HairSpray" and learn the ins and outs of all things for Black hair. |

The wigs and weaves they wear just highlight how ashamed they are about what god gave them and how secretly they want to be white. Quoting: grasptheuniverse I don't believe it's about being ashamed of what they are, it's more of a vanity thing... White women "torture" themselves for beauty too... Perms, Straighten, Tease, Dye..... Etc. Etc. Etc. It's about keeping up with the celebs & current trends... and being judged not looking and having the latest Sh*t the tube is pushing! That's SAD!!! |

I tried running my fingers through a chicks hair because the texture looked weird to me and sure enough my fingers got stuck on some clips or something. Don't let me start about all the hair dye they use to become blondes, but I forget black women get called out and blamed on everything. |

Quoting: Harry 20242703 Do you think this would be a good investment? OP, you gotta watch this hilarious documentary made by Chris Rock. The documentary explores alot of what you just said... [link to www.youtube.com] This movie/documentary was surprisingly very funny, very insightful (i had no idea), and also pretty sad. I didn't know this before watching the movie, but it seemed that for black people, especially ladies, there is a sort of a much larger and pervasive 'social pressure' for long straight hair, that it is what is considered very beautiful, and there are alot of cost in pursuit of that. There seemed to be two dominant solutions to get the straight look. One is applying chemical "relaxer' product on the hair. The thing is that product is made from very harsh chemicals (putting it mildly) and it has to be used many times in a year. The other alternative was the "wigs" that are mentioned in this thread that are made from real imported human hair. Some of the sad aspects I gathered from watching this is this... both solutions are really huge or lucrative 'industries' and seemed, hmmm exploitive? The hair industry for black folks and their hair is pretty huge and very distinct/separate it seemed as well and mainly towards that pursuit of what may be considered the 'mainstream' hair, which is something someone like me with natural straight hair (especially inherent to race) would never have considered before. It also showed a factory for one dominant relaxer as well and the chemicals and manufacturing process (don't touch it, smell it, don't get it in your eye, or inside your body). Ingredient and health concern wise it was hard to see it sold and purchased so well, but understandable. Also a huge hair 'superbowl' is held in Atlanta every year. It's a competition for people that work in the hair industry, it's a really big thing you should see what the contestants go through. It didn't seem to just be about cutting hair for sure. The imported hair was mainly from poor people in India from temples and religion as a sort of free sacrifice, which then goes through some exclusive handlers exporters, and when it reaches a few US based companies has gone through an 'enormous' markup. The selling price to the black ladies seemed the sad the most throughout this process. It seemed exploitive and kind of selling out (to humanity and their own) too though. So in the end, among black people, but especially their ladies, there is this huge demand, drive, and lucrative money for what is considered beautiful here with costs to achieve that. Everything mentioned were not topics of fascination for me generally but how Chris Rock showed it made it very interesting and fascinating. He made it for his daughters who will one day probably question their natural hair, and social cultures, and choices in regards to their hair and perception of themselves, i feel. |
