Re: HUGE Louisiana sinkhole!!!!
They do have a huge salt dome here is mississippi not far from where I live and they did nuclear testing in it during 1964..

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Salmon Site is a 1,470-acre (5.9 km2) tract of land in Lamar County, Mississippi, near Baxterville. The tract is located over a geological formation known as the Tatum Salt Dome and is the location of the only nuclear weapons test detonations known to have been performed in the eastern United States.

Two underground detonations, a joint effort of the US Atomic Energy Commission and the US Department of Defense, took place under the designation of Project Dribble, part of a larger program known as Vela Uniform (aimed at assessing remote detonation detection capabilities). The first test, known as the Salmon Event, took place on October 22, 1964. It involved detonation of a 5.3 kiloton device at a depth of 2,700 feet (820 m). The second test, known as the Sterling Event, took place on December 3, 1966 and involved detonation of a 380 ton device suspended in the cavity left by the previous test. Further non-nuclear explosive tests were later conducted in the remaining cavity as part of the related Project Miracle Play.

found this article as well they planned to use the mississippi salt dome as storage too

[link to www.duke-energy.com]

HOUSTON – Duke Energy today announced plans to convert an underground salt dome in Copiah County, Miss., into a natural gas storage facility with 3 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of initial storage capacity. The dome can accommodate an additional 6 Bcf of storage capacity.

As early as spring 2004, the new facility could begin providing rapid response fuel storage services for delivery into nearby pipeline systems and provide "moment’s notice" services that are expected to appeal to natural gas-fueled power generation stations.

It looks to me that by ONLY showing the size of the submerged area, the true nature of the degradation that's apparent of the outlying area makes this debacle seem LESS problematic.

The new map you linked to earlier today is a more accurate picture of what's truly happening!

So, I'm continuing to post it, as referance:

New Today:
[link to www.edsuite.com]

just look at the other open areas, and, the dark areas between the trees.

.
 Quoting: Esoteric Morgan

Check out this map with zoom at the north point of the rectangle. From left to right there is an area which appears to be opening up and also extends down the left side of the rectangle to the side of the sinkhole. The previous map was snipped at that point.

[link to www.edsuite.com]
 Quoting: Paa Tal

Exactly! And, you can see the newer dead and dying trees all through that rectangle, which shows a larger degraded area than what is being 'measured.'

(Ha! I have gotten my threads mixed up)

Again, for clarity to newcomers:

I guess that finding out this information must be a bit disconcerting. I don't know what to say, really.hf

One of the articles you linked to said that gas stays contained in salt domes, and, that the gas 'naturally' seals fractures, BUT, I am pretty certain that I have read that gas can, in fact, permeate the salt, until the salt can no longer contain it.

It's difficult to know what the real truth is.

"The map below shows us exactly how extensive, and, where the Louann Salt is located:
[link to www.priweb.org]

"The Louann Salt is more than 200 million years old, and is located at great depths along the Gulf of Mexico's shoreline. In some places, however, this salt has moved due to the enormous pressure being put on it from the rocks above. The map below shows us exactly where the Louann Salt is located below the surface (south of the blue line), and where structures (dark green "blobs" on the map) have been created by its underground movement."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

200 MILLION YEARS OLD, ancient ancient lands.

Ponder this and how much these salt mountains are responsible for the salinity of our very oceans including weight of water and cold.

Has it come out yet that Tx Brine cavern is cause of seismic activity instead of vice-versa? Apologies, if so..

"In response to Texas Brine’s assertion that region seismic activity caused their
cavern cavern to be compromised USGS stated (on 25 Sept 2012) that it is their belief to be compromised, USGS stated (on 25 Sept. 2012) that it is their belief
that the seismicity is a consequence of the collapse of the cavern, and not the
cause of the collapse of the cavern and the formation of the sinkhole" pg. 16

What is the mist or 'cloud' coming off the edge of the sinkhole, as today's flyover shows near the ebd?

It is not atmospheric in nature, as it rises from the level of the water.

Could this be a methane cloud?

I find it odd that they are discounting all but one company at this point, since they are admitting that the oil and gas percolating to the surface is from free and natural deposits.

Just because they are finding it at a depth that APPEARS to correlate with a Texas Brine operation, does not necessarily mean they are alone in this.

'Soil and earth science' can be a very tricky business, since there can be both horizontal and vertical seepage of 'matter' depending on the structure of the geological layers below, and, the pressures involved.

While Texas Brine appears to be the most likely culprit, my feeling is that it is time to bring in the big guns. Leaving this expanding problem to a private company to figure out may only prove to bring them back to square one. It is circular thinking at best.

If this pool of antediluvian effluence suddenly appeared on a street or in a park of Los Angeles or near the French Quarter, I doubt that city officials would be poised to sit around for weeks and months, waiting for someone to present them with merely an outlined plan of attack.

With an aquifer in danger, along with the hydrocarbons and other chemicals involved, I think that's enough cause to bring in the Army Corps of Engineers, who will have access to whatever's needed to assess this fast, and, PUT some plan into action. Should they find that doing this is NOT SUCH AN EASY TASK, at least this allows for other bodies to step in quickly, help people move if determined to be integral, and, take it from there. Texas Brine or whomever can be dealt with later.

I know that fellow GLPers will be prone to mock me for suggesting assistance from the Federal Government, but enough is enough. If there IS the potential for something really dangerous to happen, they will be called in a day late, left to go back to day one to figure it out. This will be circular thinking at it's worst.

----------------------------
This is my opinion. If I lived there, I would be demanding this approach.

For the safety of workers at Louisiana's giant sinkhole, boats are not permitted on it anymore because removing hydrocarbons could cause pressure changes that could affect the expanding hole blamed on one company, while unexplained and dismissed gas bubbling 50 miles west of the sinkhole, at Lake Peigneur, increasingly worries locals there, who say they, too, experience energy human rights abuses.
