"Life is 10% what happens to you, 90% how you react to it."
An inspiration message from a man who faced a seemingly insurmountable challenge in his life.

The former Phoenix police officer was at a stop light in his Crown Victoria police cruiser when a cab, whose driver was having a seizure, struck him from behind traveling approximately 115 mph. His gas tank exploded, trapping him in the car. Fortunately, a fire truck was at the same intersection and firemen were able to pull him from the car. He has received 52 operations to reconstruct fourth degree burns of the head, face and hands. With a passion for serving and protecting, Schechterle briefly returned to work as a homicide detective but had to retire from the police force because of difficulty firing his service weapon. A beloved member of his community, he is known for giving inspirational speeches to various audiences and was asked to run with the Olympic torch before the 2002 Olympics. He continues to serve and inspire his community by participating in Camp Courage Burn Camp, the 100 Club of Arizona for Police Officers and Firefighters killed in the line of duty, and the Jason Schechterle Annual Scholarship Ball which had over 1,000 attendees last year.

I first learned about Jason Schechterle's story while seeing him featured on A&E's The First 48, while he was still working as a Phoenix Homicide Detective. The will power of this individual to carry on with his life and keep his spirits high in the face of an unimaginable life circumstance, really moved me. He said his children were very young at the time of his accident and that his younger child would cry every time he saw his appearance, for over a year (I think). The tremendous adversity that Jason as well as his family have endured through is a wonderfully inspiring message to others. If this man and his family can rise above such a seemingly tragic event in their lives, what challenge or 'problem' in your life is too daunting for you to overcome?

5 *'s, very inspirational...

Can not believe he survived a rear end collision at 115 mph, and then to have FOURTH degree burns..

Incredible.

By the way, I'd say it's quite natural and understandable to feel uncomfortable or discomfort when initially viewing this man's physical appearance. Our brain relies on the use of cognitive maps or models to help us process our environment with efficiency - a preconceived notion or idea of what defined 'objects' should look like or resemble. So everyone has their own cognitive map/model (or image) of what they believe a 'human' should look like. When you view a stimulus in your environment that does not adhere or match up well with that cognitive map in your mind, it creates cognitive dissonance, or discomfort. This discomfort will fade pretty quickly after your brain undergoes the necessary adjustments. I know I had a difficult time viewing his appearance on TV when I first saw the television show he was featured on, but I no longer feel uncomfortable. You can see his family doesn't either! cool2

When I started work (Ironworker) at a local casino, we had to go through a safety course, 3 hours or so before we could get to the job site.

They showed a video of a guy that worked at an Exxon (I think) holding station that had the same kind of burns.

Horrific, to say the least, and really made you think twice about two things; 1. Be careful while working, 2. Be gracious for what you have, because it all can be gone in an instant.

Another important message here:

WHO YOU ARE IS NOT YOUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE! - no matter how much this agenda driven society tries to convince you that it is. Your identity is NOT how you look on the exterior!

This man is a living testament of this. One of many.
